Everton FC and RCD Espanyol football clubs sponsorship agreements with Power8 look to have backfired after the tech provider has been accused of fraud.

The Costa Rica-registered company which has offices in Spain has been accused by Taiwanese police of using its sponsorships deals to lure hundreds of investors in Asia into buying shares in the company before disappearing with their money.

It has emerged that emails to Power8 officials have bounced back and a message on its website now says operations are temporarily suspended. Spanish La Liga team Espanyol says has started legal action against the company after it failed to come forward with sponsorship payments.

Last year Power8 struck a $45m sponsorship deal with Spanish La Liga team RCD Espanyol which put the unknown technology company’s name on its stadium and team kit.

The branding also appeared on stadium advertising of English Premier League team Everton Football Club, alongside its top sponsors Umbro and Thai beer Chang.

Last week Taiwan police charged several people for alleged financial fraud and money laundering in relation to Power8.

Houchih Kuo, a lawyer in Taiwan representing some of the investors estimates that Power8 received around $300 million in total from investors across China, Taiwan, Indonesia and other Asian countries after promising investors shares paying weekly dividends of 2 per cent.

Kuo said the Power8 name was "placed next to other big companies on the websites of the football clubs, so people thought it was another international brand".

Club officials at Espanyol said that when the company approached the club it didn’t appear to have any business activities beyond a website but its representative in Spain promised that operations would be ramped up soon and arranged an upfront payment of €8 million.

Everton FC, which has yet to comment on the matter, join a spate of English clubs whose sponsorship agreements have been hurt by fraud. Three English clubs saw their sponsor 666Bet lose its gambling licence after it was part of a tax fraud and money laundering investigation.

How much may they have duped us out of if the same has happened to us as Espanyol?

Nowhere near as much as Espanyol. I think their deal was much the same as ours is with Chang, just worth a lot more probably.

Our deal seems to be for some advertising space at Goodison park. I wouldn't be surprised if they offered us some variety packs of Walkers crisps as payment.

According to the Echo we stopped promoting them a couple of months ago, so it's not exactly old news, but it's getting that way

Everton FC has suspended relations with major corporate sponsor Power8 – just weeks after renewing the deal which was first agreed at the beginning of last season.

In May last year the Blues announced they had reached an agreement with the Spanish-based technology company designating it an official partner for the 2014/15 season.

Subsequently Power8’s branding was seen at Everton’s public events, most notably press conferences presided over by manager Roberto Martinez and the deal was renewed at the start of this season.

However, the ECHO has now learned that Everton has suspended its relationship with Power8 and that its branding will not appear on any press events.

Questions have surfaced about Power8, which has previously had sponsorship deals with two other top football clubs – Spanish outfit Espanyol and London club Fulham FC.

In May a Spanish media outlet – El Periodico – reported that the multi-million deal with Espanyol, that included renaming its stadium the Power8 Arena – was being terminated.

Attempts by El Periodico journalists to contact Power8 at its Barcelona address via telephone proved fruitless. Messages left on the answer phone were not returned and further investigations revealed the offices to be empty.

Power8 says it is a “leading full service technology provider to the international online gaming and sports betting industry”.

The ECHO has been able to find little evidence of its trading activities and its website, www.power8.com, appeared not to be working.

A page on Everton’s website announcing the deal also appeared to be have been taken down.

Everton has told the ECHO that it is unable to comment on commercial agreements.

However, the ECHO understands that the club became aware of problems with the Espanyol agreement late last season.

A source said the club contacted the UK’s National Crime Agency for advice and was told there was no issues and so it went ahead and renewed the deal.

The club never had direct contact with Power8 but reached an agreement through a UK-based agency, William Grosvenor & Partners.

The ECHO understands that Everton has already been paid in full for the commercial agreements with Power8 for both seasons.

Fulham FC also said it was unable to comment on commercial agreements but said its deal with Power8 was for last season only.

William Grosvenor & Partners said it did not discuss commercial negotiations.

Old news, we binned them off in August when this was discovered.

Why it needed to be 'discovered', instead of the club doing actual background checks on these people, is fodder for a whole other thread. Possibly one featuring tales of ICI and bedsits....
