ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

They've arguably lost one of their best and most important midfielders in Wijnaldum, while Milner is now a year older and close to his pension.

Firmino continues to be inconsistent at best (I'm being nice there), Oxlade-Chamberlain isn't great and you still have expensive midfielders not doing much.

The new VVD in Konaté hasn't played a competitive fixture for them yet, while Harvey Elliot is being relied upon to play against the likes of Chelsea.

It's important we don't underestimate them as we all know how lucky they are, but their squad is ageing, deteriorating and becoming thinner.

It's funny that this alleged once in a generation defender has won a grand total of 1 league title in one of the top leagues in his entire career. At international level, has he even gone past the quarter finals? He plays for a top national as well.

Where does that leave all the defenders who have won multiple league titles?
He's a top class centre half there isn't any point even questioning it. Just makes you look daft. He's won a champions league and a league title. Plus, he played for Southampton... hardly gonna win anything there is he.

That said, Garth Crooks is a bell and the other night (I only saw the 2nd half) it looked like Matip was a far better player on the night.

At Celtic Van Dijk is a good defender, at Southampton he's a good defender, joins the RS and in the eyes of bellend pundits like Crooks he immediately becomes 'world class' and the best centre - half that has ever played the game. it's just another example of a pundit getting well and truly up the arse of the RS to get the plaudits off their fans.

Don't read the newspapers, certainly not the BBC Football pages. "Chief-writer" Phil McNulty doesn't even pretend to be neutral in his columns (well, he does pretend, but fails). They might as well paint the offices red and white, so everybody knows where they stand...

VDV is a excellent defender though, no discussion there in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong he is a boss defender but when he starts getting hailed as the best centre - half ever when we had players like Baresi, Maldini, Nesta, Cannavaro, Puyol, Ramos to name just a few it becomes ridiculous.

When the pundits were creaming their kecks over Van Dijk awhile ago when the best defender ever tag came up I was speaking to my RS mate who actually came out and said Van Dijk was the best centre - half ever, so I rolled out a list of players and pointed out to Maldini being the best centre - half there has ever been. I was shocked then in fits of laughter when he came out and said "okay, I'll give you Maldini, but I would say Van Dijk is on par with him" lol

I think you need to read what I've written mate rather than straw-manning.

I've not claimed he's not top class, what I've said is he's not the best defender of the last 20 years. Maldini, Nesta, Stam, Adams, Ferdinand etc weren't bumming around for Southampton or in the SPL until they were 27.

He can still be a very good centre half and not be the best player of all time. That's the point. Try to stick to what I'm actually saying, rather than what you think it is saying.

I don't think many people have been saying he's better than Maldini.
