Now then. The eternal struggle to find a decent set of earbuds continues. I recently bought sone rha s500u earbuds and they're ok. But just ok. They cost 35€ (or 39, can't remember).

My question is twofold: Are there any better taking into account they'll be used almost if not actually exclusively for listening to spotify on a smartphone? That's to say I know there are better, but where do diminishing returns kick in on such a setup?

Cheers in advance.

Every year I wait for black friday to come about and get a couple of pairs of £50+ earphones for half price or less to last me the year. I invested in some £300 over the ear Sennheiser headphones for listening to music in the house but as @trueblue84 says it is really dependent on what you listen to and your budget. Looking at the reviews will always give you a brief idea.

It depends on what your budget is and what type(s) of music you like listening to. Might also be worth investing in a portable amp.
Not wanting to break the bank, but don't mind spending if it's not a waste. Lets say any more than a ton would make me think twice.

Type of music - all sorts, a lot of blues/blues rock and soul. I play bass so I like to be able to pick that out, so not too tinny, but not too boomy either.

Portable amp? Sounds like too much clat.

Cheers for the reply

Don't be so quick to dismiss! It could make your existing headphones sound much better.

Anyway, have a look here. A decent selection to give some guidance.

Yeah, cheers. Only problem with that is it's easy to find good reviews for everything, even Davy Klaassen.

You get a two year warranty with Sennheiser ones and it's very easy to claim if they break (which many earbuds end up doing).

I think this is what the cool kids are doing

..never thought it would be cool to have tampons out your ear!!

If I remember rightly @ijjysmith is an authority on headphones.

I absolutely swear by Apple AirPods. Not only saying it as a fanboy of Apple but they are truly incredible. But understand some people don’t like Apple.

But you do look like the dude in the picture wearing them. Ie...a nobhead.

I wouldn’t recommend Beats EarPods. Really poor quality but their over the earphones are fine.

Just get Bose ones if you can afford them. Absolute quality but pricey.

Cheers for this, and all other suggestions.
Still not clear on one thing. Is it worth spending 300€ on headphones just for spotify on a phone. Is it polishing the proverbial or is the quality of the audio on Spotify good enough to warrant such quality cans? At what point does source material negate the difference between 30€ buds and 300€ ones?

I went through a spell of buying crappy ones on the cheap as I didn’t think it made much difference.

But eventually stumped up the cash for decent ones and I would never ever go back now.

It depends on you really. If your music is important to you and you will use them a lot get some good ones. If it’s not them I’m sure there’s some decent budget ones out there too.
