Right, which is kind of my point. Our political world has clearly changed enough that the older, previously good system is no longer sufficient to serve the kind of democracy/republic that we were founded as.Fair enough. There has only been a popular vote/electoral college split three times overall but twice in the last five times.
The divide is getting wider. I don't think is the last time we'll see this happen either. Neither side of the urban/rural split is compromising on this (not to suggest they should necessarily, perhaps some differences are fundamental and we need a more split architecture...state's rights is coming back!) and the chasm will likely just increase without some earth shattering event.
Our government and Constitution are living organisms. We need not follow the same customs our forefathers followed just because they did. We need to find out why they did, debate it's merit, make our own decisions and choose how we want to approach our time. If the Electoral College cannot support the Will of the People, then it simply should be changed.
That said a pure popular vote is also incredibly problematic due to the extreme variation in our cultural values...the merits of which I shall not debate, because it's just an internet shouting match at that point.
