It was the simple fact that the manager we took from a team that he relegated decided the best way to make Everton succeed was to bring in 3 players from the said team he relegated. And whilst the 5mil isn't anything in today's valuation, back then 5 mil is more of a 15-20m equivalent today.

To be fair we did have a good season after signing them.

The Wigan signings (I know half of them didnt technically come from Wigan) were a mixed bag. McCarthy was great for us until he got a serious injury. Joel was a decent keeper (still is) and if Kone had not got injured who knows how he may have turned out?

Alcaraz was obviously a bad one but he was only being brought in for cover anyway and ended up playing a fair bit.

he has been specifically told to concentrate on being a striker and being central, he won't be as involved but when he is it will be more dangerous and not in the corner flag.
