Derby Buildup: Evertonian writes "Liverpool deserved their success"

Did Liverpool deserve their successes, at the expense of Everton, in the 70's & 80's?

When you look at it, we are severely underplaying any sense of our own achievement in that period of their dominance. In the seasons covering the beginning of the 70s through to the end of the 80s Liverpool won 10 of the 20 titles available; but we were next in line with 3, Derby and Arsenal with a couple each, Leeds, Forest, Villa weighing in with the other three.

The Moores cash was woefully mispent by us and the decisions taken on managers hired cost us dearly (Robson or Clough could easily have been secured by Everton if it wasn't for the arseholes in the boardroom).

Never let it be forgotten ether that our last two titles was against their best team ever. They won another couple after our last, but Graham's Arsenal finished the job off we started. They were exhausted holding Everton off.

Agree regarding Clough and Robson - isn't it strange not to see manure's name in that list? no wonder the rs are bitter about their achievements since '91

I was talking to my dad about this a while back.

Of the five teams to win the league in the last 21 years only one had done it in the 24 prior to that. And 6 of the 7 to do it then haven't done it since.

Quite a changing of the guard at the top.

Depressing isnt it?

And tbf to United, they dominated the 90s and 00s far more decisively than Liverpool did the 70s/80s: 13 titles and only outside the top two in only 4 seasons out of 20. I doubt that'll be achieved ever again.

True that they punched themselves out on us. We got the sly digs in and clearly had them on their knees in 84 and 86

I've been a regular reader of The Guardian's football pages for years. When I discovered we've got an Evertonian as a regular writer I was chuffed! We've had to live with ex-reds whoring out TV punditry positions forever, that at least we can have a blue writing for a respected national paper.

But no! It's never that easy with us, is it? Turns out this writer knocks us down even more than Moyes ever did. The latest stunning example:

So I thought let's have a poll to see how typical this opinion among blues really is. Maybe I'm just too full of hateful jealousy & mindless bile and don't respect Liverpool's achievements enough like normal balanced football fans do.

:toilet:

So...let's find out how common this Evertonian's view is amongst GOT blues (for this place must offer the most varied collection of blues on the internets).

Im very bitter ,it was totally begrudged, and I would hate for them to finish in the top four this season.

Agreed - Souness I think it was who got rid of the "boot room" and they have only had success since then in cups - often on penalties. It grates with Evertonians that in the same period we have only 1 cup to show for it, hence the craving for them to be heavily defeated in derby games. The one thing I cannot stand from them is the "always in our shadow" quote - arrogant tossers they are

Dalglish did them in mate never replaced the aging players with the same quality then his head blew up when we drew 4-4 with them and he jacked it. Souness was given the original poison chalice and they just wouldn't be patient - been paying for it ever since.

He made some cracking signings though. Spent a fortune too did Souness.

Mark Walters. Julian Dicks.

Yeah Dicks.

They beat everyone, so by that alone they "deserved" to win everything, cos they won it

At their best, they were a really good team. They could out pass you, out run you and out fight you. They had an answer for everything and also had a lot of very talented players playing for them.

Doesn't mean we have to like it but I can't see how you can argue they didn't deserve the success.
