Whether you love him or loathe him, it's hard not to admire people like Shankly/Paisley and what they did for their club. If you're in any doubt over this, read Alan Balls book, or Joe Royle's book, or Howard Kendalls book, and read how they spoke of Liverpool, and in particular Shankly, and the respect they had for them.
In those days, they built a club and a team that had winning things in printed on their DNA, from a starting base of probably being a smaller team than Everton. I can't begrudge that.
However, what I do take issue with now, is the idea that because of the past success, they automatically have a right to success now, and to be considered a massive club. That is not the case anymore. They haven't won a league for close to half a century. As significant of what they did right through the 70's and 80's, is the failure to get it right over the last 25 years.
