Derby Buildup: Evertonian writes "Liverpool deserved their success"

Did Liverpool deserve their successes, at the expense of Everton, in the 70's & 80's?

Whether you love him or loathe him, it's hard not to admire people like Shankly/Paisley and what they did for their club. If you're in any doubt over this, read Alan Balls book, or Joe Royle's book, or Howard Kendalls book, and read how they spoke of Liverpool, and in particular Shankly, and the respect they had for them.

In those days, they built a club and a team that had winning things in printed on their DNA, from a starting base of probably being a smaller team than Everton. I can't begrudge that.

However, what I do take issue with now, is the idea that because of the past success, they automatically have a right to success now, and to be considered a massive club. That is not the case anymore. They haven't won a league for close to half a century. As significant of what they did right through the 70's and 80's, is the failure to get it right over the last 25 years.

They spawned and cheated every single one of them, which is two less than the most successful club in England.

They're historic also rans. So are we like but at least we know it.

Can't stand them and living through their transition to the most successful team ever was horrendous, but you don't win what they did by luck. The real pisser was us spending money like sailors on leave and getting worse while they built champions for 5 quid.

...they had a model, an unbelievably successful model during that era and nobody can take that away. The boot room has gone, never to come back and the challenge they have is repeating the success with a different approach.

Agreed - Souness I think it was who got rid of the "boot room" and they have only had success since then in cups - often on penalties. It grates with Evertonians that in the same period we have only 1 cup to show for it, hence the craving for them to be heavily defeated in derby games. The one thing I cannot stand from them is the "always in our shadow" quote - arrogant tossers they are

When you look at it, we are severely underplaying any sense of our own achievement in that period of their dominance. In the seasons covering the beginning of the 70s through to the end of the 80s Liverpool won 10 of the 20 titles available; but we were next in line with 3, Derby and Arsenal with a couple each, Leeds, Forest, Villa weighing in with the other three.

The Moores cash was woefully mispent by us and the decisions taken on managers hired cost us dearly (Robson or Clough could easily have been secured by Everton if it wasn't for the arseholes in the boardroom).

Never let it be forgotten ether that our last two titles was against their best team ever. They won another couple after our last, but Graham's Arsenal finished the job off we started. They were exhausted holding Everton off.
