Derby Buildup: Evertonian writes "Liverpool deserved their success"

Did Liverpool deserve their successes, at the expense of Everton, in the 70's & 80's?

Right on. I guess I was alone in my fume at seeing those words written by an Evertonian.

I don't think it's a massive compliment from him to them to say they deserved their success. You have to give credit where it's due. We deserved ours, United deserved theirs etc. There's more of a discussion to be had on whether your Chelseas and City's have deserved their recent success.

Correct.

Boring, dour, attrition football they poisoned the English game with.

With the exception of someone like McDermott who was a genuine talent, they were mind-numbing. They've had the greatest propaganda machine in football since then churning out nonsense about how good they were. They weren't. They were a miserable dead weight sitting on top of football.

thank fook for that! was beginning to think my entire belief system was wrong the whole time.

I wanted to find out how many of us believed they deserved their success without begrudgement (meaning unequivocally), as the writer did in his article. And how many of us have reservations, but do give them some dues (which if my belief system holds, will be the most popular option).

To be fair, you're rigged the poll a bit.

I can't say yes without insulting fellow evertonians which I don't want to do.

Which is what the article writer also didn't want to do, which is why he chose the more careful wording of "begrudging".

Maybe I should've gone for that more diplomatic word, so: "Yes. Any Evertonian that disagrees is just begrudging"

That would bring it more in line with the article's wording.

But I chose "bitter" satirically, as it effectively means the same thing, is what the red side thinks of us and is a sly dig at the writer's unconscious Everton putdowning.

But yeah, I dig...it did kinda rig the poll.

The feck is this? I hate to say it, but of course they feckin' deserved it. Probably had some luck along the way like (at times) but that's part and parcel of football matches.

jesus wept! how old are you?
Oh dear.....don't think I'm quite the oldest on here but I can just recall us giving them a 4-0 tonking at Anfield.......in 1965. Temple, Vernon and Morrisey I think.

But the road since then has largely been awash with tears. There have been a few memorable highlights (Alan Ball's derby debut in August 1966 was particularly sweet....) but mostly it has been heartache since then.

Their success in the 1970s was wholly merited.....the best side by a mile with some great players. Simple.

So my Derby build up used to be like that feeling you get when you know you've eaten a dodgy chicken curry and that you're gonna have the squits for the next 36 hours. Not a fixture I can look forward to really.

Is that the same as end of?

crikey...

I've been following since the '89 Cup Final derby, and I always go in with a stupid level of optimism.

The RS stopped deserving anything after the infamous 'Liverpool are magic, Everton are tragic' St George's Hall. And I don't care what Thompson says it was Hughes, Thompson and McDermott that sung that night. Until that day most Evertonians had a begrudging admiration for their achievements, hence the number of blues at St George's hall, and the large amount of boos and scuffles, after that day things changed for me. They deserved nothing but contempt and it was noticeable that it was only Hughes that apologised, it never came from the club.

Are you seriously that angry over rivals celebrating by having a few digs? It's not like they started screaming obscenities

Lets turn this around and say what do Libpool think of our success? Were they bitter about us winning 9 league titles? Winning the FA Cup and ECWC? Surely they must've had something to say.

Imagine what they would've said in 1994,1997,1998,1999,2000,2001,2002,2004

Imagine what they would've said when Port Vale and Shrewsbury knocked us out the cup. They would've loved every single minute of it and to this day still treat us like relegation candidates. It's like what happened to us re: relegation scraps has given them this self belief that they are immortal to us and above us. They will always see us that way.

When you say "at the expense of" us, I just wonder how you mean.

Apart from the Clive Thomas derby, we never looked like winning anything after 69/70. We matched them in the '80's and even after the European ban, we still won a title.

I don't like to see them succeed ahead of us, obviously, but how do you mean "at the expense of Everton"? That changes the question.

The truth is if the shoe was on the other foot,it would have been Mick Lyons singing and we'd have all been laughing.

I think he meant all evertonians, tbh.

The article is about man u and how everyone enjoys a dominating team more once they stop dominating because everyone hates the guys at the top. Which is true. man U have had their turn and I would love if they crashed and burned now just to free up that spot at the top if nothing else. One team always winning is boring.

What he said about Liverpool was nobody minded them winning all the time, apart from us thousands of evertonians, but everyone is quite glad it's not happening any more.

Which is fair enough really. Not sure why you're so worked up.

This is the quote in context.

But people will want to see the very top teams taken down a peg, that is in the nature of competitive sport. That is perfectly healthy. Apart from a few thousand Evertonians no one really begrudged Liverpool their success in the 70s and 80s. They deserved it.

They were not hated for it, though it was felt the domination was beginning to chafe and it is a somewhat similar situation with United now. There are undoubtedly people who think they have been at the top for too long and it is time for a change, but the minute United do become an ordinary team again and hopes of a seamless managerial transition are abandoned, the last two decades will be enshrined for all time as one of the glories of English football. A golden era is much easier for the rest of the game to love once it is over.

And they also had a slash in the the plant pots at St. Georgie's . I haven't forgot.

When I said "fume", I wasn't really pacing up & down the room looking like this:

just looking for an angle for a Derby Buildup thread.

Yikes! Just because one team is dominant doesn't make it a Golden Era. It's embarrassing for the general quality of the Premier League with the amount of times Man Utd have won. In fact take away the massive money injections of Chelsea, City & Blackburn and there's only Arsenal left who have won the league on their own terms other than Golden-Era Manchester United.

I am quite sure that many fans hate Man Utd because of their dominance (and quite rightly when you look at how much support they've had from refs).

Golden-Era if you're a red (Man U in the 90's & 00's, or Liverpool in the 70's & 80's)...otherwise, most of us will begrudge them their success.
