2017/18 Davy Klaassen

Yep. Same with Sandro.

They both needed a goal nice and early to settle them somewhat.

As it is they've both been crowbar'd in and out of the side with no set role in a dysfunctional system. They've both been awful and now they both look shattered confidence wise.
I think both Klaassen and Sandro suffered the most under Koeman. Both players have just never seemed too sure of themselves when they've pulled on the shirt so far. In Sandro's case he simply hasn't had the service from the midfield that he's needed and it's caused him to start overplaying. You can tell he's desperate to make a mark and it just hasn't been working for him. I personally think he needs to try and form a 'partnership' with either Davies or Sigurdsson, or hell even Barkley, just someone to feed off of.

And he's managed 1 goal and 1 assist.

Notwithstanding you making up your usual tosh about having watched 540+ minutes of Watford for the sake of trying to win an internet argument, we've seen all this before from The Sniv; plays mediocre in a winning, in-form team, then runs and hides at the first sign of trouble.

He's a crap player, he continues to be crap, and he's much like Klaassen in that way.

I don't get to pick and choose who I cover ffs lol he's played well and contributed to their good start.

It doesn't mean I suddenly think he's a world beater. I just don't mind admitting he's in good form.

Benefitted hugely from Dolberg knock downs and passes into the box when weak teams left him unmarked.

Its one thing to be playing against weak sides in Holland but another to turn it on in the premier league.

He wasn't even in the top 4 best players at Ajax last season, I wouldn't have signed him and it seems odd that we went for him.

Wasn't just Dolberg as such though Zat was it?

Obviously having a good striker to play off really helped, but Klaassen was the spare man and third-man runner in a dynamic midfield three.

Schone would sit and Ziyech was the playmaker.

Klaassen could then zip about and make off the ball runs to get into dangerous areas, playing quick passing with Dolberg, the wingers and Ziyech.

We could build a similar midfield when all fit of Schneiderlin-Klaassen-Barkley, with two wingers and a striker ahead of them.

Which is why Koeman's lack of plan has baffled me even more. Play players in familiar roles to help settle them - adapt your style to the players you have signed/have available - not try to shoehorn them in.

He just must be able to offer more. Highly respected at ajax which means he must have good teckers. Captained the club which means he must have some balls deep down. We just havent seen it yet and he has hidden during games esp last 2 or 3 matches he played in. The only time i saw him for ajax was the cup final and to be honest i wasnt impressed at all but overall he must have a lot more than he has shown us

He went full on " missing " in the Europa Cup Final mate.

That should've been a warning sign, that he's really just an ordinary player, same as his less expensive alter ego, the Clev.

He is also a really good presser of the ball.

Issue is, we only ever (or have done anyway) press in one's or two's, rather than as a whole team.

So Klaassen will drive forward, press the oppo, but they'll be nobody backing him up, which means there's a simple pass on for them and Klaassen looks like a div and there's now a huge gap where there's no players.

You have to press as a unit. It's key to being successful.

Look at City. They win the ball back with such speed and ferocity, because there's always three players around the ball at any time.

Not sure I see Klassen as a presser. The lad can hardly run and has no accelaration to enable him to close down space quickly

Speaking as someone who enjoys insulting the Clev, I'd chip in and ask you to wait until Christmas before we start passing judgment on Davy's poor soul. He deserves a chance.

I just hope that he can play lower than a no 10, put him alongside Gana and could he play? Hopefully not as bad down there as Barkley or Osman used to be

Remember our 2nd goal vs Split in the first leg - all down to his pressing and then quick pass into Rooney.

Same with the chance he missed against Lyon. He pressed and intercepted the pass.

You don't need to be quick to press well, it's about timing and working together. Too often we don't do that.

If you're rapid, like Mane - or dynamic and strong in the tackle like Gueye or Kante - then you can cover more ground, but we should be working and pressing in threes and fours.

Would you put De Bruyne or Silva down as 'pressers'? No, neither of them are, yet both win the ball back loads because City press together rather than individually.

This. And when that pressing works he's the kind of player who will then join the attack that has good pace in it. He is a quick one two type of player that has a decent finish in him once inside the penalty area. I really really hope he is not made a scapegoat of Koeman's sacking and we give the boy time to settle in so he can show his qualities. Judging him hastly in a team which is overall shambles is not sensible.

Just a thought, regardless of what you think of him its interesting to see how our performances went after Klaassen was no longer in the side.

I think the biggest issue with Koeman was his bizarre insistence on playing players out of position, and just not matching players up well together. Players like Klaassen I think would work perfectly alongside Davies in behind the striker. One provides great passing and instincts, and the other provides youthful energy.

Odd alright in the fact we have a surplus of midfielders and were sugning rooney and sygi. We have davis who was excellent last season. What we needed was 2 top strikers and brought in none. Still hoping that he can get his act together and prove some value for money
