David Unsworth - Temporary Manager

Unsworth took over under terrible circumstances with a team devoid of any spirit let alone a class striker. I don't expect him to turn Niasse into Eto or DCL into Kane in 2 games, but it seems any less and he is rubbish. He got a result and given time he could do it more often and gain the experience to go along with his managerial talents... he didn't turn the u23s into league champions overnight .. give the guy a chance!

Firstly let's congratulate him on a fantastic 3 points and for managing a side that turned round one of the most serious situations we've been in for years and for his positive game changing substitutions. He's done a lot for the club and has been great for the Under 23's and will always have the respect of Evertonians.

However, I have to agree 100% with anyone who has said that he is out of his depth at this level at this moment in time. The problems with this team are there for all to see and the key one being that we have to play a balanced side with width and a side that contains some pace and attacking threat. For me most of his tactics have been no better than Koeman's and he made a terrible mistake with his starting line up today once again. Playing Sigurdsson up front and lumping balls up to him on Thursday was embarrassing to watch as well.

Proven to me in the last few weeks that he should be no where near the manager's job at the moment.

Time to appoint someone and I fear the only option is Big Sam at the moment.

Thing is Liam we are talking on the back of a very lucky win against an at best mid table side.We have to be realistic for the future, taking on a manager with no Prem experience is a huge risk, and some of the names being mentioned who have and have been successful (Ancelotti,Pellegrini etc) did it with ready made squads.Ours right now is a mess.
Hiring Allardyce or Dyche has risks too. Dyche has never managed more than a hard working side that he has built in his image. Allardyce will keep us safe, probably get us a win at a top 6 team but will also have us playing horrid football that will eventually sooner rather than later cause the fans to call for his head while leaving us with the likes of Andy Carol when he goes.

Keeping Unsworth right now is actually the low risk option. Why?

1. He's shown he can motivate the team and get us wins against teams who will most likely finish above us.
2. If he loses the next couple then we can still bring in another manager. What do we do if we get rid and like Palace get no turn around in form. Then what?

While we are not losing then he stays. If we drop into the bottom 3 again then he should go. I don't see how that isn't the less risky option.

Ancelotti, Tuchel etc are dreams and wouldn't touch us at the moment with a barge pole.

Which is why leaving the manager decision until the summer when we have time to line someone up who can do the job for the next 3 years is so important. If we go for Dyche we are going to be faced with a Sean Dyche team for the foreseeable.

One more win and we are comfortably mid-table. We don't need to hit that particular panic button right now.
Exactly

He has no choice but to stick with the players at his disposal, and drag in some younger players who are, embarrassingly, way better than the senior players. To suggest that he has stuck with the tactics and formation though is, clearly, fake news.

4-2-3-1 with no natural wide men.

What’s fake news about that?

Round pegs, round holes. Sure the players haven’t hanged but play to our strengths and not to facilitate Rooney

Allardyce has been managing at Prem level for a long time and if Carol was his worst signing he's done better than Koeman without breaking sweat. And don't forget when he was at West Ham Carol was called up to the England squad (not that, that proves much these days)

Well we did have a clue. Because he’d managed teams in transfer windows before.
No we didn't because Les Reed signs the players for Southampton so we had no clue about how he would perform and let's face it his signings were disastrous. Williams, Schneiderlin, Klaasen, Siggurdson, Rooney, Bolassie. Keane looks overpriced at minute but could still come good. Pickford looks decent as does Vlassic, Sandro could still come good and with a £5 million fee we won't lose any money. In short we've wasted one hell of a lot and frankly i think you would be hard pressed to do worse!

Not sure what team he picks or tactics he uses will be effective untill our midfield players start showing for the ball and passing it forward. Our only tactic seems to be give it to keeper ,lump forward And get ready to try and win back posession.

I like Unsworth and to win after being 2-0 down is not to be sniffed at but make no mistake we were beyond awful today.
Honestly its unrealistic for us to suddenly start playing brilliantly. Our confidence is shattered and the players had no idea how to play under Koeman. What i've seen so far is players putting in a real shift (with a couple of exceptions), better energy and much better spirit. What i've also seen is poor defending and nervousness in large part caused by a lack of confidence and lack of organisation that we had under Koeman. I posted before we even started playing these 4 games that Unsworth would need some time to work with the players and that he really didn't have much in between the 4 games. He's done a pretty decent job in my opinion with what he was left with. I would like to see us give him more time rather than panic and get Dyche or (god forbid) Sam Allardyce in.

By the way anyone know the last time we came from 2 down at home to win in the league?

Southampton are the only team he’s managed mate.
And if you think he had no say in any signings ever then you’re wrong.

But the point is we don’t know how Unsworth would do in a transfer window. It’s not even a bad thing. It’s just a comment.
