2025/26 David Moyes

Next two games will show if that belief really is coursing or not. Go and beat our direct rivals in Brentford and Liverpool. That would really be making a statement. Win both and we’re in the driving seat for Europe with five games left having come through a tough fixture list. If we lose both though the season is basically almost over. They’re the margins at the top.

Yep, that’s the benchmark of fairness. Take a relegation threatened team to European contenders in 14 months and now progress can only be proven if we beat our local rivals and a team who have finished ahead of us every season since they gained promotion.

And Moyes will be labelled a bottler if we lose either game by the usual suspects and they will bang on about missed opportunities, Moyes’ ceiling etc.

I'm a little concerned that European qualification is now seen as the benchmark for what should be considered an acceptable outcome this season.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be disappointed if we don't manage now that we are in with a realistic shout, but a perfectly acceptable outcome this season for me, before a ball was kicked, given where we'd been finishing for the last few years and the relative spend in the summer would have been a comfortable 10th-ish position

I still think that would be ok, and I don't want to lose sight of that if we don't end up getting Europe and I do have to keep reminding myself that it would have been totally unfair to expect European qualification as a minimum outcome this season before the season began.

The flip side is that if Moyes achieved Europe at the first attempt, there really isn't much of a debate about that new contract - it'll just be a case of how long.

I didn’t say it was the measure of progress. The article said belief is coursing through players veins. All I’ve said is we’ll see in the next two games if this is or isn’t the case. If we play like we did the first 30 minutes of the Anfield derby or like we did in the home game v Brentford then there’s no belief coursing anywhere. Carry on like we did v Chelsea though and the article has it right.

We are in the crunch time now and the upcoming games will decide if we make Europe or if we finish in the bottom half. That can be said whilst still recognising that even the worst case scenario is overall progress.

Random things can happen in football matches. We could easily lose the next two games because of bad luck or anything really. The margins are tight in the premier league and the first goal is often decisive. That doesn’t change the upward trend that we are saying. But don’t expect us to play well or win every game. Not even Arsenal and City do that.

There is no reason why we shouldn’t be beating Liverpool, even Dyche did it when they were actually good & challenging for the title under Klopp, so if Moyes gets out his knife for this one he will fully deserve the vilification that follows.

Get another performance out of them like Chelsea & he will deserve the praise he gets.

Looking at the endless car crashes of trendy managers taking over pl teams then being found out very quickly and usually sacked before Christmas im alaways curious what people mean by progressive football.

Now maybe Pep coming to City was a progressive step, Klopp, who wether we admit it or not, was a successful pl manager didn’t really play “progressive” football.

Now Amorim and Martin who played floating inverted overlapping wing backs, or some such nonsense arent anyone I would like near Everton.

Slot has spent £500m to destroy a pl winning team.

Emery at Villa, got completely canned at Arsenal, had to go away and then come back wiser.

We really do have to be careful what we wish for.
Look at Chelsea as well:

A short lived new manager bounce, followed by 4 loses on the bounce…
Like you said, be careful what you wish for, mate.

We were 12th under Dyche in 23/24 after adjusting for the points deduction & 13th last year under Dyche/Moyes.

It would be difficult to argue that a bottom half finish was progress given the money spent & the loans together with the early cup exits. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that. 🤞

Agree there’s no reason we shouldn’t beat Liverpool, but we’ve only done it once at home since Moyes left.

So it’s Europe or bottom half? What happens if we finish 8th but other Results mean it’s not a European place?
