Moyes has dragged the team, dragged the club, from relegation strugglers to European contenders, that deserves praise, and backing.
At times this season Moyes did look lost, the home defeats, selections, subs, lame cup exits, no one can say he didn't deserve criticism or scrutiny.
Every manager goes through difficult patches. He's definitely worked through those difficulties. If we get in to Europe he deserves to lead us in to next season he'll be here no matter what.
Every manager deserves criticism and scrutiny. Blindly taking a position on either side of the debate and abandoning all critical thinking is a sign of a genuine lack of intelligence.
Personally, I've said all along that a mid table finish was my target before the season started. Think that was a reasonable stretch based on wanting to see improvement on previous years and reflecting that
Moyes had been given mid table resources to spend rather than the relegation budgets of previous years.
Away games and games at home against teams who want to come out and play are where
Moyes excels - yesterday was great, but I had a feeling it would suit us.
European qualification would be more than I expected this season, but with 7 games to go we are 3 points off a Champions League place - realistically that isn't happening, but we are on track to get 50 odd points, which is a decent improvement on the last few years and that will have us close to European spots. Unless we completely fall apart in the last few games, the season has been largely successful. The thing to be more concerned with, in my opinion, is what good looks like next season. Maybe it's a bit soon for that discussion given we don't know budgets etc yet, but it's hard to imagine at this point that Moyes will underperform what the minimum requirements were for this season (or at least my minimum requirements).
