2025/26 David Moyes

You conveniently forget Newcastle who spent huge. Liverpool were a good side which lacked professionalism. Leeds emerged with a young side late 90s. Arsenal under Wenger. Chelsea spent decent amounts too and had quality like Zola. But yeah Man Utd with half a side of academy graduates had it easy and just spent their way to success 👀
None of those clubs had anywhere near the spending power of Utd. Ferguson lucked out on a random windfall of exceptional young players which he never repeated and was able to buy players like Keane, Cole, Yorke, Stam, Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Ferdinand etc. They were spending massive amounts every season. Other clubs had money but nowhere near as much.

Given our one bid that actually went in was for Tete, and his right backs at west ham were Coufal and Wan Bissaka. Any right back we do sign is obviously going to be in that right back who can defend but does nothing going forwards mould.

If we sign a right back in the summer it will be a giant cumbersome fella who resembles a centre back more than a full back, if we can’t find one of them then it’ll be O’Brien. Vault this.

Edit: adding a caveat, if we sign a right back who is of a different profile to this, he will sit on the bench behind O’Brien.

We'll see mike. Even if that turns out to be the case, I'd wager we see a more attacking full back on the other side.

You really have a poor recollection Kev. Lucked out? He planned for the academy as soon as he got the job in the mid 80s. He foresaw that a good academy would give them a great base to build from. He sold Hughes, Ince and our very own Kanchelskis to make room for the youngster's to play and got absolutely hammered by the media for it. Sure he spent money too but so did Newcastle and Arsenal so he didn't do a Chelsea under Mourinho and spend spend spend in one go. If you think Mourinho was getting the better of him then sorry you're wrong. Ferguson was building his next Man Utd team at the time so was in transition (plus struggling to find a suitable keeper)

This is why I often talk about the recruitment team either being allowed to do their jobs, or gotten rid of. What is the point paying a recruitment team if the manager decides who we do and don’t bring in? Thats not how the model is supposed to work.
You need them to be working in harmony Mike. If we're buying younger players for the future then we need a manager who has faith in them. Otherwise we'll have what we have this season with players kicking their heels with their development stunted

Yeah, this isn't true.
It is though? He only became our right back part way through Moyes's last season here, then became the guaranteed starter there under Martinez.

EDIT - Just had a quick check on transfermarkt just to make sure I wasn't getting mixed up but I wasn't. The longest run of games he had at right back under Moyes was 8, midway through his last season here.
