2025/26 David Moyes

Absolutely destroyed the careers of those players, didn't it? I genuinely don't see the criticism here, you obviously don't have the proof of what would have happened if Osman, Stones and Baines had been thrown in instantly.
That’s not the point, someone is trying to justify Moyes not making subs v arsenal till very late on, because the players on the bench are a massive drop off from the start 11 apparently, even though 3 or 4 were flagging 15 minutes before they came off and is just randomly throwing names out there to say look he plays kids some of these were 23 one was already an international

I'm not trying to justify anything, I'm offering you one possible explanation.

The biggest reason he doesn't go to the youngsters if we aren't winning imo is because he doesn't trust their defending and positioning.

They might offer fresh legs but if we are trying to steal a result at the end they can end up more of a liability than a threat.

Especially away against the league leaders I am not surprised he wasn't throwing gambles on 19 year old wingers or full backs.

Just a load of old waffle And what ifs . The league leaders threw on a 16yr old. Liverpool constantly using a 17yr old.

Like you said yourself he doesn’t trust them defensively even at 1-0 down with 6 minutes to go and we conceded another goal anyway.
It’s why Moyes will never take a team that extra yard. To negative and it grips him like a vice.
Have we got the worst squad in the premier league???
Because we use the least subs

They through on a 16yr old.

I'm not trying to back or oppose Moyes in these situations, I am looking at the club I support, not a single person.
So I look at things from both angles.

We have possibly been the only 2 people that have said from the start that other than a couple of players, the rest were club profile signings.

But I can't help but look at certain things as possible stubbornness. Eg, You might be in control of the recruitment, but I am in control of the Teamsheet.

I wonder how we would fair in a graph of goals or points gained after the introduction of subs..

Armstrong has been playing almost every game since he came back.

..."getting a few mins in most games and used out of position once the transfer window closed".

Is it a coincidence that once the window closed he was benched?

Every single Everton manager since Moyes first spell has had various levels of criticism regarding the use of youngsters. Remember the Simms brigade?

It's a tired criticism when we've not produced a Prem quality youngster since Barkley. Other young players have come and gone during that spell, but how many have gone on to bigger and better things? Lookman? Onana? any others?

When a manager signs;
Aznou
Alcaraz
Dibling
Rohl
George

Then elects to almost never use them meaningfully, it's indefensible.

The only two young players he seems to use are Iroegbunam and Armstrong and that appears to be because both are able to tackle players at a good level and have more experience of English football.

That’s utter nonsense. McNeil is a bang average player the club were happy to sell 6 weeks ago, he’s had 2 decent games all season. It’s not a massive drop off to George or Dibling. Tim is in over Rhol or Armstrong, because he’s stronger and has more prem experience, he’s not a better footballer. He trusted Rhol and Armstrong in midfield away to the form team in Europe , Villa . He trusted Patterson at Right back for 3 of 4 games and he did well, is probably going to the World Cup. Play him right back for the last 20 and move garner back into midfield.

He trusted Dibling away at Forest in a decent performance. He’s had to use these players at times this season, but now can’t bring them on for 20 mins when 3 or 4 players are flagging.

Stones never made an appearance for us
Hibbert was already in and around the team when Moyes turned up. Osman didn’t become a regular till he was 23 and Moyes and been at Everton 2 seasons
Baines was also 23 and had played 2 full seasons in the prem for Wigan, but only played half the games in his first season because Moyes was playing a CB ahead of him at left back, sounds familiar. And Fellaini has already played for Belgium when we bought him.
Try harder

Totally and utterly nailed it

Listen mate, I’ve watched Everton for years. I can’t tell you the number of times I am convinced Everton are going to lose unless we change something and I have been wrong on the vast majority of occasions. If you are the team in the ascendancy in terms of possession etc. and you have a very strong bench then it makes sense to make attacking subs to freshen things up if you are struggling to score. Especially if you have a strong bench. In our situation when we have a good shape, are sitting back but not giving up chances and looking comfortable most managers wouldn’t change anything except maybe fresh legs up front which is what Moyes did. We should have drawn that game, we just dropped off for a second and were punished. Ironically after subs had been made. Against Utd we did exactly the same thing, with 10 men and it worked perfectly. We actually gave away more chances against Utd and most people on here would have made subs mid way through the second half but Moyes held his nerve and we won the game. Managers don’t make subs if the structure is working well.
