2025/26 David Moyes

Moyes should be honest - did Xhaka sign for Sunderland because they had European games to offer?

It's about wanting to play in a team they can see themselves playing in. We look like a team that create few chances and play a very hard working, hard running behind the ball style. That's off putting to many players.
Xhaka came for his own personal reasons, he needed a second chance over here and to show us the man that he has become..

Sunderland was a perfect place to do that, showing he doesn't think he's to big for a certain club..

Everything he has done since returning should be applauded, because he has changed everyone's opinions.

Xhaka is an exception in the rule..

These continued comments must be a real inspiration to the players we signed last summer. 🤔
I don't think players watch managers press conferences mate.

They're genuinely pointless.

Purely created to give Sky Sports News some form of sound bite to fill the time.

I find odd that people analyse managers comments week in week out, when effectively they are just asked the same mind numbingly boring questions, week in and week out.

No one wants to be there.

That doesn't mean that players sign for European football though does it?

Speak for yourself - always thought he was a terrific player. I’d have signed him over Rohl, Fatuwu over Dibling and an actual full back over Aznou.

That would have given us a much stronger squad this season.

Just saying Xhaka is the wrong player choice to use in your argument.

Players definitely sign for Europe, whether that's Europe today, or the plan for Europe tomorrow.
Europe plays a massive part especially if you are an already established player with interest in you.

A player buys in to the plan you sell them.

It wasn't off putting to Jack Grealish & KDH.

Not sure i understand what you are saying.

Xhaka is a cracking player, but his time at arsenal didn't paint him in a good light. he left, grew up and has come back to show the man be is now.

He could have gone anywhere, even to saudi for millions, but he came back here and to Sunderland.

I don't think you understood the post.

If it was CL football Ild agree. The Europa and Conference no...or certainly not a deal breaker.

Players want to play enjoyable and winning football. Forwards/MFs want to express themselves on the ball. If they find a top flight English PL club that pays well enough also then that's the deciding factor IMO.

But that club has to have ambition.
You don't just sign for a club that let's kick a ball but nothing more on the horizon.

The lads that go to the normal clubs that get brought up are using them as a stepping stone for hopefully a move to a club playing in Europe.

Players have ambitions, those ambitions dont always end at a paycheque, and if they did they would earn more at a club in Europe.

Yes, they use us to do that...so that further undermines Moyes' argument that only having an oven ready Euro spot for them clinches deals for us. 🤷‍♂️
