Il Lombardia on Sat - the classic of the falling leaves. I believe Eurosport have full coverage.

Must confess I don't normally follow the race, more interested in the cyclocross at this time of year. But there will be some big hitters sorting this one out so will try and catch what I can.

It always strikes me as a bit of a bummer in terms of timing. I know it's there because the timing has huge historical roots, but it always seems like the Worlds is the conclusion to the season, with Il Lombardia then suffering by looking like a bit of a bolt on that few people are bothered about. That shouldn't be the case for a Monument.

Eh edit: 14 October. Sorry got days switched up.

Impressive win by Nibali yesterday. He's a very impressive bike rider, and I do like those who can compete in a range of events all year. The fact that he's won a couple of monuments alongside his grand tours is something I very much like as it's pretty rare in this era of hyperspecialization. Not sure Contador or Froome have ever really done the classics, even Liege or Lombardia, which are built for climbers.

Contador did them a few times, in the early days of his career. Had some decent results including third in the Flèche Wallonne.

It's a shame really. I miss the days when Hinault, Lemond, Kelly et al would be as active in the classics as in the GTs. Perhaps the only one apart from Nibali that does is Valverde.

I still think it can be done; like you mentioned Valverde. Or a little while ago Evans, was usually quite solid all year round (not as good as Valverde but few are). I am probably missing some others.

I think a huge part is motivation; look at Dumoulin he says he can't be bothered riding all year round. He doesn't even like riding GT's.

I suppose a big part depends on how many GTs you do in a year. If you say a typical workload is perhaps 80 days racing a year, then two GTs is already over half of that number. Throw in perhaps a couple of warm up races for each and you probably have 25-30 days extra. It doesn't leave a huge amount left over, especially if you want to practice some one dayers (San Sebastien say or Fleche Wallonne) or compete in the Worlds.

I guess there is also politics to play to an extent at a team like Sky. If Froome targeted a couple of GTs, and then went after the hilly classics as well, then it doesn't leave much for super-domestiques such as Poels, Henao, Kwiatowksi et al to go for. You'd imagine a part of their loyalty at Tour time is down to them having decent races to go for as individuals.

LOL; my favourite part is when he wants to start hitting people with a pump. I understand a bit of frustration but this is a bit over the top.

Caught the highlights of the Zeven CX last night - WvA back in charge, MvdP second - just epic ability on the bike. Who is top dog between the two of them do you reckon Armel? I guess they have contrasting strengths and the course is so important in cross.

Been racing our local league this autumn - great fun but results are down on last year. Bought a new tubular wheelset without checking the rim profile and it's a bit concave for cross - rolled two tubs off in the races which is a massive ballache. All sorted now so looking forward to the last few - unfortunately the one in Everton park has been cancelled, with at least one rumour that it was down to the area not being safe for the event. Sad state of affairs if true.

Yep it really depends. VdP has superior agility, he can do crazy things on a bike and has a bit more speed. Van Aert is better on heavy circuits, with loads of mud that require brute strength. He's also a superior runner, so if it's a lap that that has significant running sections he'll also probably win.

Saying that, this year VdP is clearly superior to Van Aert for a couple of reasons. The first being that Van Aert wants to ride the majority of the spring classics, and has adjusted his training and racing regime for it - will be interesting to see if it can be done. Secondly Van Aert rides a Felt bike and they are apparently horrible. They are slow. Discontent all over his team, the ones in the road racing team even clandestinely tried to use taped frames of other manufacturers.

If you ever ride on tracks where you expect a lot of punctures (old quarry or something) you should use the old green Michelins. They won Van Aert the World championship last year. Was a brilliant championship tbf.
