Our fansI’m glad that Moyes has been declared a successful Everton manager
What a marvellous statement, let’s get a statue
I liked Moyes but he had over a decade to build a team. Carlo has had eighteen months and had improved us overall.
Killed my libido that disaster, Everton thatSomeone's missus didn't put out on valentines!
I'd disagree pretty much totally with that to be honest. The fact that we've beaten good sides (kind of, if we include Leicester who aren't a traditional one and Chelsea who have had a weird season) is more just evidence that we can sit back and defend for our lives and sometimes get a goal on the counter/from a set piece. It's absolutely not evidence, in any way shape or form, that we're able to compete at the top. It would be much more a sign of progress if we were showing ourselves to be consistently better than all but the top sides. We're not inconsistent, we're just good at certain things and bad at others. If you look at West Ham's results, they're grinding out results against the bottom half with the occasional draw to top sides. They have a win against Leicester as their signature win, and otherwise have the odd draw against the traditional powers. Even if they made the Champions League, they'd finish bottom of the group.
We're regularly beating top teams but leaking points to the bottom half. We can compete, but we can't sustain the level we need to sustaim throughout the season.
One problem is in principle easier to fix than the other. The state of our club is better than the state of theirs. We're not at a place where we have the depth for consistency, which is sometimes leading to overtinkering in rotation by the manager, but this looks more fixable with a summer window or two than their situation does.

Yep, exactly. Most half decent sides will win a game or two at home against the big boys, we've always done that as far back as I can remember. Putting the minnows in their place week in week out is how you show you're progressing as a side, from there you can try to improve to the point where you're closer to the best sides.Essentially we are able to do to the top teams, what the lesser teams do to us. For a long time we have always been a bit of an island on our own, very much the 7th team in a league of top 6 and the rest.
Without getting too technical, we bring teams above us down to our level, and turn it into a bit of a lottery by ensuring it's a low scoring game. To be fair it's been quite a sensible strategy in such games. Long term it's not scaleable though. It's why when the likes of Allardyce moan about never being given a chance at a higher level, it's because you need a different skillset.
The performances that hint at better this season, are really more games like Brighton and West Brom where we clicked offensively.
