Might be shot down in flames for this but I’d rather we missed out on Europe if it meant the conference league. First playing in that competition isn’t going to be a selling point to attract players. Secondly, we will need a far bigger squad of players to compete in the PL. We have given contract extensions to 3 of the oldest players at the club Tarks, Gana and Keane. We’d probably be looking at similar players who are out of contract nearing the end of their careers to fill the squad out. Thirdly it will impact massively on our league form.
We have the nucleus of a good team, I think Moyes has stabilised the ship now and we should be looking at manager who can take us to the next level. Iraola would be my choice, or if we wanted an untried PL manager than surely Fabregas would be a good shout considering the outstanding job he’s doing in Italy.
Why would you be shot down in flames? There is a lot of sense in what you say and I think quite a few Everton fans think the same as you.

Not just talking about this season. Talking about all the years Moyes has managed us. Just saying when we win it's usually a hard fought 1 nil or 2-1 win with backs to the wall as we defend those leads. We're very rarely comfortable, we're decent teams are.
Sorry - It's just that when you stated that 'the good teams stroll to 3-0 wins quite regularly' in a thread about the match from the Sunday just gone I assumed you were talking in the present tense as a way of assessing Moyes' merit, or lack of, in his current role as Everton's manager using examples from the here and now.

That's why I presumptuously posted factual data that completely disproves that statement. Apparently though it was a historical overview of a period that started in March 2002 (24 years ago) and ended in May 2013 (13 years ago).

My mistake. Apologies again.

So are you happy ?
Do you mean generally happy (if so, yes, 'cos I'm getting married in September), or happy with the current state of Everton? On the assumption that you mean the latter, then this is what I think.

I want us eventually to be winning league titles and playing on equal terms with Europe's elite. I recognise that before we can get there we'll have to be regularly in and around the top 6 in our league for some seasons. I can also accept that it might take another season before we even get there. Where I differ from the deranged zealous on here (and I'm not saying you're one of them, mate) is that:

  • I accept that every journey will inevitably encounter some bumps in the road, whoever is in charge and whatever our route.
  • I recognise that things will take time, and don't think it reasonable to act like a spoiled 4 year old on a car trip, incessantly repeating "Are we there, yet?", and getting all snotty when it turns our we're not.
  • I don't believe that we can win every game in the season, and each loss is down to the manager's failure to adopt the right (according to me) tactics/selection/substitutions/etc, etc. Sometimes other teams just play better than us, or our key players just have a poor game.
  • I accept that a manager will Sometimes make a mistake, whoever he is, just like we all do.
  • I don't think insulting the manager or players with 'coward' and the like after every setback is reasonable or helpful. Equally, I hate the aggression that some show to anyone daring to debate against them.
None of what I've just said means that people can't rationally criticise any aspect of the club, including manager and players. I just think we should all adopt a calm and rational approach, rather than letting each disagreement or disappointment lead us to attack others, or hysterically adopt an I WANT SUCCESS AND I WANT IT NOW standpoint.

Nothing I've said here is directed personally against you, mate. I hope I've made clear my viewpoint, anyway.

I'm talking about Moyes in general mate. Not just for us but his whole career as a manager. I'm not a Moyes hater and I definitely think he's worth at least another season to consolidate and stabilise us even more. But his methods are so frustrating at times. When we go ahead or even equalise at times the team visually retreat 20 yards. Like he's gonna defend, defend, defend and try and hit teams on the break which we have done at times, but to play those tactics efficiently and consistently you need two things. Firstly you need to defend properly and have lots of pace on the break. At the moment we've got neither.
