100 for 1 then I predicted we do collapse - get Parkinson in drop Ali for starters -Overton lacs 10 miles of pace....
Well it's at Old Trafford and England have to be able to bowl them out twice to win, so Parkinson should come under consideration for this game, whether it means a rabbit and 10 and 11 or not. Depends on the pitch that the groundsman produces - I'm sure it will have a bit more pace than the last county game, which Mahmood reckoned was the flattest he's bowled on.

Overton had a poor game after a decent one at Leeds - I think he'll be left out with Wood coming in. Any ideas about resting Anderson or Robinson, who also looked below his best in this game, will have to be put aside now. Crank Jimmy up for one last effort...

I presume Buttler will waltz back into the team, though who he replaces is anyone's guess.

Notts closed on 127-5, a lead of 231 so it looks like a first defeat of the season on the way for a weakened Lancs.

It was a good effort, though, by the medium pacers Bailey (2-46), Lamb (1-46), and Balderson (2-29), and it's the performances of Balderson and the other youngster, Lavelle, that will give Lancs something positive to take from the game even if they lose.

Elsewhere, Yorkshire gave hapless Somerset their second consecutive thrashing, winning by an innings and 33 runs with 9 wickets in the game for Matt Fisher, who I'm sure would have been an England regular by now if not for a terrible succession of injuries. Amazingly, he's still only 23, so there's still hope.

At Edgbaston, Hampshire have a lead of 233 over Warwickshire with 2 wickets left including Lancy lad Keith Barker, 49no, to add to the 5 wickets he took in the Warwick innings.

Shane Warne on whether you should enforce a follow on if you have the opportunity.

He unsurprisingly takes an almost diametrically opposed view to the usual bunch of half wits you get on TMS, saying you should in almost all circumstances NEVER enforce, if at all possible bat again. If however there's only a limited time left in the game then you think seriously about enforcing before deciding to bat again.

Obviously qualified it to not be silly so if absolutely no choice then you enforce but definitely a general rule of thumb to follow - bat again in virtually all circumstances.

Possibly coloured by an infamous defeat for Australia in Kolkata (Calcutta) against India in 2001 when Australia made 441 batting first and skittled India for 171 a lead of around 270. Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie all said they were tired in 40 degrees heat and wanted their feet up with plenty of time left. Needless to say young Kasprowicz eager to look enthusiastic on his debut said he was more than ready to go again. Captain Steve Waugh ignored the senior players enforced and the whole team battled on in oppressive unbearable heat, batting being far easier against a massively tiring attack. India posted a huge 670/7 Dec and skittled the flaked out tourists for next to nothing.

Since then no Aussie captain has ever enforced unless there's absolutely no choice.

Another wonderful day's play at Trent Bridge with Lancs fighting valiantly to avoid their first defeat of the season, thanks to some fine batting from Luke Wells, 57no, and George Balderson, 45no.

Lancs finished the day on 115-1, still needing an unlikely 329 more to win. This after Alex Davies completed a pair by being out first ball in the opening over of the innings - his Lancashire career seems to be ending with an uncharacteristic whimper.

Earlier, Notts had batted carefully against the medium-pacers before cutting loose when the part-time spinners came on, Moores and James both missing out on centuries when dismissed for 97 and 91, both to Luke Wells. Tom Bailey picked up the final wicket bowling off-spin before Notts declared on 339-8.

Chances are that Lancs will be bowled out at some point tomorrow, especially as Mahmood is unlikely to bat, but their weakened team has performed creditably, none more so than Balderson, with both bat and ball. If I was a betting man I would nip down to the bookies and put a hard-earned 50p on him playing for England one day.

Cheers for the update.

:(Mahmood out for 5. Lancashire all out for 341, Lamb 68n.o. Valiant effort to take the match into the last hour.
Yes it was a good effort from Lancs, with lots of 'if onlys' that could have led to them saving the game.

The final day began badly with Wells only adding two to his overnight total before he was spectacularly caught behind by Moores, diving in front of 1st slip. Bohannon creamed a couple of sumptuous boundaries before Paterson swung one into him and the umpire reckoned it would have clipped leg stump - DRS would have been in operation if available. Vilas didn't last long, trapped in front by a similar ball from Hutton - no doubt this time.

All the while Balderson had been defending stoutly, having a rare old battle with Notts' young left arm spinner, Patterson-White. It looked as though he'd seen the spinner off until, with the new ball about to be taken, Patterson-White bowled a rare bad ball, dropping short with his final delivery and Balderson pulled it towards the boundary only for Paterson to take a marvellous diving one-handed catch at square leg. Balderson gone for 77 - 192-5.

Rob Jones had batted for more than 90 minutes for 33 when he attempted to leave a ball from Fletcher but somehow managed to inside edge it onto his stumps - 210-6. The end looked to be coming when the new ball also quickly accounted for Croft and Lavelle but Danny Lamb and Rob bailey had other ideas, their partnership lasting for 30 overs and adding 108 before Paterson returned to bowl Bailey for 52 with 16 overs remaining.

Surprisingly, Mahmood came out to bat, with a runner, but he could only last another five overs before he was caught at short leg off Hutton, leaving Lamb not out on 68 and Lancs all out for 341.

Notts now lead the table with 49 points while Lancs find themselves 5th with 31.5 points. Lancs visit bottom of the table Somerset next while Notts go to Hampshire, who also won today. Yorkshire host Warwickshire at Headingley. To have any chance, Lancs have to hope Somerset perform as poorly as they have in their previous two games and the other two games end in draws, preferably rain affected!
