Playing a far weaker side than they needed to against the far better test team with NZ ranked number one in the world - (especially in English conditions) made little sense to me then and still doesn't tbh.

Oh, I agree. Was just trying to make sense of it myself. We might have seen something a lot different if it was a longer series, even if it was 3 tests.

I'm genuinely not sure. If it's dead level after an innings then India are favourites. England need at least a small lead I think. England have the chance to build a lead but two wickets after lunch for India and they are well ahead of the game.

Woakes a proper batsman at number nine always made England's position far better for me, even without hindsight - just 50 runs with four proper batsman is better than 5 wickets unless it's unbelievably bad to bat on

I think I said a couple of weeks back that Woakes is an outstanding allrounder in England. There is a question about his performances abroad, but in England he is an absolute must. I'm surprised hes always a bit in and out for England really. A very underrated cricketer.

I think you saw some of the value of Moeen too today. Shared a partnership of 70 odd at a crucial time.

Delighted to see young Ollie Pope show his quality today. The experienced Bairstow and Moeen both played beautifully, but ended up showing why they both have ridiculously low averages for players of such talent.

England need a few quick wickets tomorrow morning, otherwise it could be a long day. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind India batting well and England having to show they have the patience and ability to winkle out well set batsmen, rather than Anderson etc running through them again.

England looks to have lost the advantage of having a big first innings lead, but usually after making a great recovery the batting
eventually falls apart. Not always, but sides very rarely win after having to chase a big deficit.

Good, hard fought morning. Ideal for me would be India all out 320-350, ensuring England have to bat well to win. They then knock off the runs, leaving Kohli to rue his ridiculous insistence on leaving Ashwin out.

England U19s in action against West Indies. Three Lancs players in the team, Tom Aspinwall, George Bell, and Josh Boyden.

Runs for captain Jacob Bethell of Warwickshire and Rew from Somerset.

Always interesting to watch these players: some go on to have decent careers, the odd one a great career, while others just disappear.
