Cricket

Great day of cricket. First two sessions to England and then an amazing counterattack by Pant, well supported by Sundar, to put India in control.

Bess showing a bit of character at the end with two or three good accurate overs when he could easily have picked up a wicket.

Pant, though, the star of the day. - that was special.

pathetic. Should be the end of Bairstow, Bess & probably Burns.

Absoultely gobsmacked at that batting effort of Dom Bess.. i mean he stunk the place out with the ball and then comes out swinging like that. SDhameful

The batting has been utterly woeful. If Root doesn't score big then they lose.

Too many of them haven't a clue how to play spin. Too many of them aren't even in the best side and shouldn't even be playing.

Cricket is becoming a joke, play India in England with pitches prepared to suit our bowlers we win. India return the favour, rinse and repeat.

Nothing wrong with this pitch and we still got thrashed. Pitches in England seam, pitches in India spin. Not for the first time the Indian spinners are a different class to ours and, unfortunately, even their numbers 8 and 9 have a better technique against spin than our top 6, Root excepted.

Ridiculous that England have played the last 3 tests without one of their most experienced players of Indian conditions, and one of their best players anyway in Jos Buttler. I hope Moeen Ali is getting a good night's sleep as he prepares for his lucrative stint in the IPL, having watched his teammates struggle and a young confidence-shot bowler thrown to the wolves.

That should really be the end of Sibley. He will have had 18 matches. In the last 15 innings he's gone past 36 twice. On one of those occasions was when he was given not ought 3 times when the ball was hitting the stumps and he got umpires call. The other was when the team got nearly 600 on a featherbed pitch, and he could stand at the other end of Root getting another double hundred.

Had he rightly been given out, and Root not done the leg work for him, it would be 0 innings over 36. Nowhere near good enough.

On a positive, Dan Lawrence showed something in this match. a 46 and 50 (the same as Sibley has managed in the last 15 innings) and essentially having to sacrifice his wicket as he was batting with the tail on both occasions showed a lot of promise. I hope England stick with him, fin a new opening partner for Crawley (not Burns) and bat Lawrence at 3. Pope is on shaky ground but probably gets a run until Australia at number 6. Buttler will 7, Stokes 5 and Root 4. For the love of god don't take Sibley and Burns to Australia.

Ideally Crawley would bat at 3 where he got his double hundred but, yes, England are desperate for openers as I agree about Sibley, his technique is just so flawed. Places are up for grabs for the NZ series next June.

Really annoying to see their tail wag so much. After doing all the hard work and getting the batsmen out cheaply, the bowlers couldn't complete the job. Probably because they were a 2 and a half man attack with Jimmy, Leach and a half fit Stokes.
