Computer games.

hahahaha

Brilliant. Eurogamer has taken the cash for their review haven't they

Nah I think it's just genuinely divisive. Video game reviewers see the same mechanics over and over, so when something different comes along it really is a breath of fresh air to them, so they enjoy it. For that reason, it doesn't matter that it's crap - it just matters that it's gave them something different for a few hours.

They're also desperate for video games to be seen on the same pedestal as cinema to justify their career choice, so anything artistic they'll give a thumbs up to - Polygon and Kotaku are the worst for that.

They aren't fake/bought reviews - they're just written by people who are reviewing it for themselves rather than as an advocate of the consumer, which is what a review should be.

I've been around long enough to have seen this all before. I remember vividly when Peter Molyneux made "Black and White" and Will Wright made "Spore" - both incredibly flawed games (still better than Death Stranding, but still obviously flawed), both given massive review scores regardless, simply because of who made them and because they were 'ambitious'. Kojima and Death Stranding is the exact same scenario.

That era of gaming spoiled me. It's why I'm immune to "grass density" nonsense now; I couldn't give the slightest toss about graphics, but too many do because I don't think they actually know what a game is meant to be anymore.

Speaking of games that are terrible but have fantastic grass density, here's another trashing of Death Stranding.

That bit 5.30 in when he falls over, the lad in the video looks like he's going to smash the desk.

Surely not long until someone just takes the cut-scenes out and uploads it separately.

Wow people actually paid money for this. I suppose every game has its conceptual ideas at what constitutes fun — the very essence of video gaming is fun, no? This looks absolutely torturous.

I think game review platforms are a licence to print money You just write a triggering, divisive review it’s that easy. I can’t believe there are neck beards who write replies in the comment sections desperately hoping for a reply.

That's causing the confusion - most bad games are bad by accident; they're incompetently made or have a bad development cycle.

Death Stranding is confusing because it's been made bad on purpose. It has been masterfully made by Kojima, he's hit everything he's aimed to do - but his end goal was a trippy, weird cinematic movie that got people talking. The gameplay is a side product to that - something to pad out the length of his movie and provide some sort of interactivity so he can sell it as a game, because that's where he made his name and can draw a shedload of cash; not as an all out movie director.

When you go a movie, you don't interact with it - you experience it. That's the key difference between movies and games.

There's two questions I'd ask fans of this game - 1. If you could just watch a long cut of it on YouTube with gameplay removed, would you enjoy the more? and 2. If Hideo Kojima hadn't made it and it was just released by some studio out of nowhere, would you have cared as much.

'Made bad on purpose'? @Tubey you aren't half full of crap sometimes

1. No
2. Yes, I'm not a Metal Gear Solid fan, only played one of them once and thought it was quite average.

It has been. There's no part of that gameplay loop that has been designed to be fun. It's been designed to be a chore. It is an objectively bad game - the only question is whether the cinematic experience makes up for it. For some, it does. For others, it doesn't.

That's just not true. You can't say that unless you've played it yourself.
The game is basically a survival game with an extended focus on reconnecting and rebuilding a post apocalyptic world, where the survival challenge is extended to your cargo.
It is not "walk for an hour, watch 30 mins of cut scenes". That is frankly incorrect.

One minute you're driving your reverse trike on full boost on roads you and other players have contributed to together, the next minute the trike has been knocked out of action by entering an area with BT activity and you can either fight or find a way to sneak through them.

Sometimes you go through MULE territory who will persue you and attack, or you can go stealth and steal valuables from them instead. I had a quest (called orders) to retrieve something MULEs had stolen, and I let myself be detected by their perimeter sensors, left some decoy smoke cargo to draw their search party, snuck into their camp, stole back the thing and escaped in their own truck. You can't tell me that wasn't fun or was 'made to be bad'.

Balancing equipment Vs cargo carrying capacity is one of the puzzle aspects of it being a survival game. You want to be equipped for every scenario but also want to be steady if you have to cross terrain.

I ain't saying it's the greatest game ever, I'm not. I'm saying it's unfortunate that people are writing it off as pretentious or 'designed not to be fun', when that's just not the case. It's a different game than what a lot of people expect, but it's by no means a bad game.

I just remember he was getting upset that everyone was using his road/zipline on stream and nobody was leaving likes XD
