Computer games.

What's going on with this?

Scratch that, just read above.

It's scary mate.

Just imagine, for a second, your mate lent you a book, you opened the front cover and it closed, asking you for six quid first. Or you rented a DVD from lovefilm and it spat it back out until you slipped a tenner in the DVD slot. It's f*cking disgusting, and add in the always connected Kinect too... it's almost an Orwellian dystopian future.

Other industries will be watching to see if the consumer allows Microsoft to insert its long, hard, dictatorial rod up their arses. It's a genuine outrage and I hope it bombs. It seems short-sighted too. I mean only a third of 360s have an Xbox live gold subscription -- the internet isn't 100% reliable, and it should not be used as a controlling device, telling you when and how you can use what you've spent your money on.

After reading the article I can't disagree with any of this. The constant internet connection to play offline seems simply absurd to me, I just can't see it lasting.

It's getting to a point that the new consoles are becoming more and more detached from what made them successful in the first place.

Gone will be the day you buy a game and play it. You now have to jump through hoops and be hooked online to play a game which may or may not be any good.

They're completely forgetting that not every game will be worth the money. That every game will be different; short, big, terrible, poorly developed, richly produced. But by locking you in, limiting trading, having you constantly online... That **** game you spent 40quid on that lasted 10hours of game time with a terrible online mode and no redeemable features, ends up an expensive coaster.

If Sony are smart, they see what ms are doing and swerve it, gaining more followers in the process.

But I'm guessing someone has done the math and figured they'll make millions doing stuff like this, so will go with it as well.

For the first time in about 20+ years, it's putting me completely off console gaming.

I'm online all the time but I would still find that a pain in the backside

I might not get an X-Box One or a PS4 to be honest. The only way that will change is if the PS4 really impresses me

I think most have their consoles online, I think the annoying thing is that the xbox is now governed by it.

You move house, have a dodgy connection, Internet breaks down, modem breaks, ms serves breakdown etc.... That entertainment hub you spent upwards of 500quid becomes an expensive paper weight for the time being.

Also... Is it going to be speed dependent? The UK is slacking behind the rest of the world and connection speeds vary up and down the country.

For the MGS geeks, here's a video that gives you an insight into Sons of Liberty (My personal favorite).

Doubt anyone will watch it as it is 35 minutes long but i really enjoyed it so thought i'd post it!

If you love MGS then you'll be tearing your hair out with this:

Tell me how long you last before you just had to stop watching the video.

My mate told me to watch this the other day and Havnt got round to it yet, I'm certainly dreading it as I've see bits and wanted to jump off of a bridge.

Mate the MGS3 one is worse, but you need to watch the MGS2 one to mentally prepare yourself.

Btw, I watched the review you posted, it was great. At times it felt a bit too 'english class' over-analysing but it was very interesting.

Oh god, that can only be a bad sign!

And yeah i really enjoyed it but do agree that there is some over analyzing in there, still quite interesting. Done my media studies coursework on MGS2 and the subject the video shows. Annoys me a bit because the video was only released at the beginning of this week and would of got my B up to an A for sure!

Not as bad as first thought but still rather annoying.

Backlash over Xbox pre-owned games
Fans react to new Xbox One launch
New Xbox One has been unveiled
Microsoft has clarified its position on selling and buying pre-owned titles for its new Xbox One console.

Confusion arose after it appeared the company would impose a fee for playing pre-owned games, a move that was highly unpopular with gamers.

The company has now said in a statement that games can be traded in, but only at "participating retailers".

Games can be freely passed on to friends, Microsoft added, but only once.

"Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends," the statement said.

"There are no fees charged as part of these transfers.

"There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once."

The Xbox One will come up against Sony's new console, the PlayStation 4.

Sony is yet to show off the console and has not set out its policy on pre-owned games.

Its worldwide studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, told news site Eurogamer that used games would not be "blocked" on the console, but would not specify whether there would be a fee for using pre-owned titles.

Always online
The Xbox One has also come under fire after it emerged it might have to be always online to play games.

After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud”

Microsoft
Microsoft explained on Thursday that while the console did not have to be online to play, it did need to connect at least once every 24 hours.

The company said: "You can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library.

"Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies."

This policy would "raise a few eyebrows" in the gaming community, one technology blog wrote.

But Microsoft argued that these policies allow individuals greater access to their games, even if players are not on their own console.

"After signing in and installing, you can play any of your games from any Xbox One because a digital copy of your game is stored on your console and in the cloud.

"So, for example, while you are logged in at your friend's house, you can play your games."

As the console is always on, it allows developers to create "massive, persistent worlds that evolve even when you're not playing", Microsoft said.
