Clean sheets...

Tommy Chong

Player Valuation: £70m
As you all know, we have only managed 1 clean sheet this season (barely)!

We just can't seem to stop conceding goals at the moment!
We need to plug the problem up, as you all know, 'clean sheets win games...'

As much as I hate to say it, I think Jags needs to be dropped for a few games...
And Johnny needs to come back and pair with Distin.
I seem to remember that most of the times that they played we were quite tight in the back...

Plus we keep the dutchman from being grumpy!

Thoughts?

It is silly to think that if you concede the only people at fault are your centre backs.

I'd say our general play -- certainly of late -- encourages the opposition to come at us and try and break us down. We could have had Vidic and Kompany at the back against City and we still would have lost.

Also Chelsea have also only had 1 clean sheet this year. Scoring is more important. That's what I'm worried about.

I wouldnt drop Jags right now he has looked ok the last couple games, plus it wont happen.

True, Moyes would never drop him unless he is injured!
But how do we stop the goals coming in?
I seem remember a couple of seasons ago when we were tight at the back,
and teams found it impossible to score against us,
but now we're worse then Spurs were last season!

I agree with you on that... But we usually play two defensive midfielders in front of our centre halfs... (ie Fellani and Rodwell)
and still concede!

If you're not playing well as a team you'll concede mate. We've played well once this year in my opinion -- against Villa.

Now that's a good example I suppose. We defended their second I think very poorly. If I recall though it was a combination of Hibbo and Distin that buggered that one up.

Also Jags has improved noticeably since the transfer window closed. Dropping him won't do anyone much good, bar Johnny, who I think isn't half the CB Jags is.

I dont think Jags has improved particulary since the transfer window, he doesnt look confident, having said that is Johnny 100 % fit right now, if he is I agree with you, Tommy, I'd drop Jags, we cant afford to give him games to play himself into form.

It wont happen though, Moyes is more likely to **** off Bill than drop Jags.

Yeah this.

Something is wrong in that we really struggle to keep clean sheets, have done for a while and its not getting any better.

Sure it might not be so simple as changing one player but a defence needs to be confident and assured, and the team need to have confidence in the defence.

Whether thats the case or not i don't know but Jags certainly doesn't seem to be the player he was, he seems to be making at least one cock up a game, some we get punished for some dont. Of course he's not the only player doing so but i can't see us being much worse if he drops out and Heitinga gets a run in centre defence.

Thats what squads are for, thats why you buy experienced international defenders, so they can play. Especially if the person keeping him out of the team isn't playing too well.

In general clean sheets are alot harder to come by these days for all teams. I would also say the way most of our games go these days ie constant pressure but unable to score makes the team venerable defensively. If we got our goal to go with the presure it would take alot of pressure and nerves off our team defensively.

It certainly isn't as simple as to blame the cb's or jags in pitucular as some do!

Spot on.

I think our centre backs are fine, our problems are the full back positions, mainly RB. Baines is pure class but is sometimes caught forward and Dizza has to cover for him, meaning that Jags and Hibbert/Neville have to cover the space. The 2 right backs we have at the club clearly are not good enough when we play the better teams. Hibbert was chewed up and spat out by Chelsea today, the header in to the air and then the miskick had me chuckling and cringing at the same time!!! Would Coleman be any better there yet, I am not sure, but I think we need to try him sooner rather than later!! Thought Vellios was fantastic, for the small amount of time he was on the pitch and Drenthe showed what a great ball he can put in to the box - a few small hopes to take forward, however it is looking like the normal slow start to a season again!!!! Onwards and upwards blues, we can take points at fulham next week, take our revenge against chelsea in the cup..... COYB
