He's in a bit of a quandary, Unsworth. Rooney "has" to play, he wasn't bad tonight but he's not a striker. Niasse isn't "the answer", but neither is DCL. They played ok for the few minutes they were in the pitch together. Honestly think Sandro and DCL could work well as Sandro is a better footballer than Niasse tho.

And it's all well and good wishing for Gylfi but the lad movies as fast as me after my knee surgery last fall.

Thing is mate - that's not true at all. I've said before; don't give him it temporarily, give it him now. Otherwise we get this stupid situation we are in now, where everyone is getting misty eyed over effort, 'dogs of war' and nice words in a press conference rather than looking at it coldly; we lost (again) and we are out of a cup (again) and Unsworth said we need to win, and we haven't.

Must admit, I agree mate, don't want to get back in that scenario where a defeat doesn't matter as much as long as we put in a battling performance.

The other thing is as well, whether Unsworth gets the job or not, he should be judged just as rigorous as Koeman was, can't be any leeway because he's 'one of us'

Decent performance unlucky not to get a point. Not sure what people are so mad about - looked like a different team altogether I though.

Davies was brilliant and we created a lot of chances.

It was a cup game mate. I think this might by why I'm afraid of us giving in to the group-thought here.

For the negative nancys tonight, here are the facts:

We've been, for all intents and purposes, utter muck for large parts this season with no desire, no cohesion and no clue on the pitch.

Koeman, quite rightly, was then sacked just 48 hours ago. Unsworth comes in and has a chat and a 1.5 hr training session prior to his first game - away from home to Chelsea in the league cup.

Unsworth picked a reasonably balanced, albeit experimental team tonight but made sure to use quicker forward players who'd naturally utilise more width. He handed young Beni B his first senior start in the middle of midfield and he put in a very respectable performance and a full 90 minutes.

The team had to feel their way into the game and it showed in the first half where we didn't particularly threaten, Chelsea were (admittedly) comfortable, but regardless we were compact and tried to keep it simple which kept them at bay for large parts of the half. The goal we conceded from the corner was understandably disappointing, but otherwise it was not a bad half, certainly heads didn't appear to go down at any point.

Second half the players knew we were still well in the game and confidence grew as time went on, moving the ball about well and actually putting them under genuine pressure for spells. You could hear very clearly that the fans were reacting to this, which hasn't happened all that often this season, and the team were actually creating chances which is what Unsworth wanted to see above all else. We were unlucky on a number of occasions.

Their second goal was a moment of quality that they didn't really deserve on the balance of play, but moments later our two front men at the time combined to put the ball in the back of the net, which we definitely DID deserve, and the fans responded.

It's a disappointing result, but only disappointing in the sense that we deserved something out of it which is far more than you can say for most of the sh*te that has been on display this season. In that second half I saw a group of hard working players showing a bit of willingness and character to move forward and pressure the opposition for once. It was good to watch, so much so that I was literally on the edge of my seat at times.. THAT'S how I want Everton to make me react.

It's clear as day that the squad overall needs a shakeup and certain players 100% will need replacing as they simply aren't good enough, but for now we can only work with what we've got, and tonight I saw a team who played for their manager and for each other - definitely a big positive to take away if anything.

Yes, we're out of the league cup for another season, but personally I'm not bothered. The way we've been recently we definitely have bigger fish to fry right now. The real test was always Leicester - tonight was Unsworth getting his feet under the table and he's started well.

In cynics corner over here, FM (while sneakily finding Tuchel's number) has allowed BK to feed Unsworth a line about him getting the job if we win etc.

Exactly my view on it. Bill's trying to keep the natives onside, give him a chance, oh ok he's lost some games, can't be helped, not quite ready though, oh here's one Farhad prepared earlier, but we gave him a chance!!!

It's got to be given to tuchel or someone of his Calibre I hope. And specially if he's said he would welcome an approach unsworth will restore some pride but long term na hes just not it
