Got a 13 plate Golf Bluemotion TDI as a courtesy car at the moment.

I quite like it, and I'm surprised at the power it has for a car that's supposed to be economic. I don't want mine back now FFS. The auto hold handbrake and stop/start engine gizmos have left me looking like a tit at the lights a couple of times now though. Daft features.

My car does that just a matter of getting used to it.

I'm in the hunt for a car at the moment. Been doing the rounds and reading reviews and I think I'm going to go for a Ford Fiesta or VW Polo - solid, economical and reliable.

Just wondering what you guys think re negotiation tactics. There are a lot of fiestas and polos 3-4 years old, less than 20k on the clock going for around £7000.

How much do you think I should aim to realistically haggle with the dealers?

I will be paying cash which should hopefully help my negotiation stance, but really I don't want to spend any more than 6.5k. I was thinking of going in at 6k and meeting them in the middle, but I'm welcome to hints and tips.

Which ever one you go for aim for the highest spec, FSH, Long MOT, make sure tyres are tip top as they could be expensive to replace.IF cash push for something like 25% off. There are always more dealers to go look at if first one does not want to play. Another tip wait until near end of month when they are trying to meet sales targets.

Cheers. I didn't think anything like 25 per cent of the window price would be a achievable, appreciate your thoughts. Maybe I should go in a lot lower than 6k, maybe 5k.

Just git rid of a proceed Kia. Diesel engine was really good on fuel. Loads of kit on it like Bluetooth and parking sensors. it was solid enough. £7k should get you something with a pretty hefty spec and low mileage, not to mention the balance whatever is left of 7 year warranty.

Dealers don't much care for cash buyers as they miss out on finance commission so they don't get wildly excited about a wad being waved under their nose enough to give you a better discount than if you are buying on the never never

Why do you want to put £7k into a car?

You could put a grand in and walk out with a new one on PCP for less than £200 per month and get a years free insurance

Heard bad things about PCP and not keen on high monthly commitments. If I invest wisely and own the vehicle outright, I know I'll be able to get a good amount of my investment back when I want to upgrade.
