I sold my Escort last month and got a newer and much nicer Mondeo 2.0 glx of my grandad for a few hundred quid, i'm 20 so my insurance is a bit more lenient and despite being a whole 600cc bigger then my ezzy it's actually better on fuel so all round i was made up, 3 weeks of driving it and some lady put her car into reverse insted of 1st and mashed the gas and as a result snapped my bumper off and damaged the bonnet/pass wing. I've gone through my insurance and all that ****, my cars been taken away for repair and everything was going well untill tuesday, i got a phonecall from the company responsible for repairing the car and they gave me a dilemma. Because of the age of the car (1998) and the estimated cost of repairing all damage (it's a very rare paint option so hard to match colour for new bumper) they've said i can either go and get the car fixed which they will pay for but won't fix themselves, or i can write it off and get what the car's valued at.

This is where i'm being indecisive, i do like the car but it's far from perfect, it averages 20-25mpg around town which is killing my wallet, it has a few faults like an Oil leak, dashboard illumination issue and the front left suspension needs some minor work doing too plus some other little bits. Whilst i'm happy to get it fixed as i know a guy who can do all the work for me for cheap but i've also been considering walking from the car and getting something a bit more economical. I've got my car's value down on the insurance as £500 which would get me a decent motor as i'm quite the bargain hunter but looking at the costs of other Mondeo's of the same age as mine they tend to go for around £200-300. I'm scared of writing it off incase they give me insufficient funds to replace it which brings me to a question.

If they were to pay out the cost of my car would it be the £500 i've valued it at with my insurance or do they try to negotiate a price? I'm young and uneducated on the land of insurance and could really do with some advice as to not get shafted, any helps appreciated.

I had that scenario with the 206, except the mrs had bumped it so we would lose no claims (on both policies that she is named on). In the end I bought a wing off ebay and bunged it on, they would've resprayed half of the car to "get a match" I fixed it for about £60.

Find out what they would give you, as you get to decide what happens so need to know all options. If it's killing you on fuel and you are gonna make a profit then I'd cash in if it was me. If you on;ly spend that on areplacement though you are likely to find that it also wouldnt be too good on fuel. Work it out on how much you are likely to spend up to your next mot based on mileage, sometimes the extra cost for better mpg doesnt pay itself off if you dont do enough miles. I worked out that on our normal miles the fiesta diesel would pay for itself over a year, if I use it instead of mine whenever possible then we will be better off.............when it is fixed ffs.
I will prob get rid of the Jeep if the fiesta gets sorted with no probs or delays, and get another dirty diesel that does huge mpg and cheaper insurance and tax.

First of all if you're going through your insurance it should be them talking to you, not the company that are fixing the car.

Secondly if your insurance company write your car off then they need to pay you enough money to replace it with the same car; same age, mileage, condition etc so look on Autotrader to see how much YOUR car would cost. If they offer less show them the cars on AT that are as close as possible to yours.

No trouble with my car 2009 Subaru WRX, awesome machine, running on Bridgestone Adrenaline RE002's sticks like the road like **** in a baby's nappy, the only thing that makes me smile at the moment. Yes it's Blue!

Still not got this thing back ffs..

I just want it back here tbh now so that I can release various agencies on him.

HMRC- he's vat reg and gave me a 'receipt' that doesn't contain vat number, amount of vat etc just on a page from a notebook.

H&S exec - unsafe workplace and practices, I wandered in off the st no problem and there were fellas grinding away with no specs on, all smoking, place a general ****-tip.

Trading Standards - if not satisfied with repair or wish to get a full refund, there's a lot of shiz I have to set in place for this tbh that makes consumer rights quite difficult to enforce.

I reckon HMRC and H&S will give him enough of a headache to start with, cos he's certainly given me some over the last fortnight.

Car aint coming back, not fixed anyway, I requested a refund today when I finally got him to answer the phone, he refused and said "I'm not fixing it now so go to Trading Standards and get a Solicitor."

Gonna go CAB on monday morn 1st thing to get assistance with the letter that needs to be written etc. It's impossible to contact Tr. Stds directly, you have to go through the CAB and they inform them, then you have to wait to see if they contact you.

You have consumer rights on your side but you end up in small claims court, which can rule in your favour but cant make him pay up. A bit of a joke tbh. It is a limited company so not sure if they can enforce the payment or he will just 'go bust' when he has enough ccj's to wipe them all out.

This was supposed to be a money saving exercise FFS, as it is I'd have been better off getting the brand new one financially, would've lost on it but would've had a NEW car for 2 or 3 years, whereas we have no car and he has the money.
