Remember when Stones did the Cruyff turn in his own box and then gestured to the crowd to relax? It's probably a perfect metaphor for Roberto's brand of football.

I do believe that he's in the process of building something astonishing. We've got the core of Stones, Barkley, Deulofeu and Lukaku. And then Funes Mori, McCarthy, Besic and Cleverley are yet to hit their peak. Niasse is in that same age group too , but he's an unknown quantity. And I'm sure that there will be more top drawer recruits in the summer. Possibly even Yarmolenko?

Beyond that we have players like Browning, Galloway, Garbutt and McAleny. And beyond that Ledson, Dowell, Leandro etc.

We've had a taste of European football and we're becoming increasingly consistent in the cup competitions. We just need that extra bit of luck.

It has taken time for players to adapt to Roberto's possession-based game but the long-term result is that we'll have a team who are incredibly slick. I remember seeing a clip of Bayern going to City and the side from the Etihad just couldn't get the ball off them. We're already seeing signs of that but there will be times when the opposition are happy to sit back and let us have the ball and we need to find a way of breaking them down.

Our side is young enough that they could learn to win big competitions together and dominate the game at home and abroad during their peak years. Fantasy? Perhaps. But we've shown that we're a match for anyone even in our raw state. If we can add a bit more savvy and a bit more strength in depth why couldn't we be challengers?

The FA Cup set Ferguson and Kendall on their way when they were under pressure. And, even if we don't win tomorrow, I don't see the sense in dismantling all the many positive things that Martinez has brought to the club because we haven't yet mastered the art of defending.

you have got a point. Aside from the Swansea debacle our results of late have been ok. West Ham was always going to be a test after that belg penishead got his second yellow.

that said, the reasons/excuses are starting to run out.

I agree we have great young players - but our players are not the issue. "Adaptation is the mark of a genius" Roberto lacks such.

There is nowt I would love more than to see that which you envisage to become fact.

I don't think it will simply because I have now come to the conclusion that mastering "the art of defending" is not very high on Roberto's "to do" list.

But you right in saying Roberto has done many good things and brought many talented players to the club.

And in all probability someone else will come in an reap the benefits.

Johnny Carey had built a very talented squad by the time he was fired in 1961.

He couldn't just get them up that extra notch.

Harry inherited that squad, made a few additions to it and two years later we were champions.

You forgot about Baggies.....

Brave indeed Billy. I personally think the storm clouds are gathering and the negativity now being voiced against Roberto will only gather pace, but you know what I like the guy as a bloke and I don't disagree with your theory and you make some good observations, I just think bringing those players through playing 'The Martinez way' requires time and patience, he is coming up to 3 years now how much longer do we have to wait for him to come up with a method for us to defend without giving away cheap goals but I live in hope.

I'm with you on this aspect. There's a few elements that I support in the original poster's writing, namely that Martinez has built a talented squad.

Equally I agree that there is real potential in the squad which he could 'potentially' manipulated into a fantastic squad that challenges.

Nevertheless, the problem is that Martinez is failing to show that he has ability to bring such plans into fruition, thus I can't see him succeeding.

As I've said along, I genuinely hope that he could make such dreams happen, but we're arguably decline due to the same reoccurring problems.

People may say that you should look beyond the table, however in the end that's the judge of our overall competitiveness in the league...

...that and coming out of Goodison content. As he is not fulfilling either of those criteria I see tomorrow's game as pivotal for Martinez's tenure.

I was willing to be patient last season to see if it was a one off and more importantly if he could fix glaringly obvious errors in his judgements.

Unfortunately, I doubt I can muster enough spirit, enthusiasm and suitable blood pressure to give him another year at the reigns if this continues.

I would love him to succeed... I just no longer think he's capable of doing so as a solid defence simply isn't in his methodology.

In another age then I'd be hugely optimistic about the future as we'd have a good chance of this young group staying together and building something special. Nowadays that kind of thing seldom happens as no one has the patience any more. After last season, I think some kind of success this year is crucial to convince the Stones and Lukakus of the world that this is a club worth sticking with.
