Do you think your idea is for something that genuinely/contains software that doesn't exist yet?

If so, you should look into getting it patented, although there is a high chance parts of it will exist but if it doesn't, it will add a lot of value. But it's pretty expensive to do

It's a completely unique App but it will need to be "made" from scratch, I will search around for info about Patents. Nice one Mate.

Patenting is good, as is creating a proof of concept, that you'd likely need a developer help you with (or AI if you have a lot of time on your hands; Claude does a good job for "vibe coding" currently). Don't think anyone will invest/grant anything based on a patent alone unless it's something truly groundbreaking.

If you get a patent for it, it kind of is ground breaking as it's the first ever idea. But it's whether people care about the ground it's breaking

Aye, there are endless patents that just never get commercialised or turn out to be commercially successful.

I have an idea for a mobile app and will need to get a loan or grant as I don't have any funds. Does anyone have any experience in a similar venture and would be willing to offer some info/advice?! If you could not bother asking what the idea is I would be grateful cause I won't be telling.
It’s hard to give advice at the best of times; knowing so little about you or the idea means I may be way off in my assumptions -and I may just be wrong full stop. With all that in mind, some random thoughts:

- vibe coding a proof of concept / minimum viable product us easier than I used to think
- getting a grant might take longer and involve more hoops than I used to think
- a patent might take longer, cost more, provide less real protection ( can you afford to sue a big company to enforce it)…
- in general people are way less likely to steal your idea than i used to think - it’s harder to get the “right” people to listen
- if it is a good idea you may end up owning a small percentage after you bring in people with the power to exploit it ( but that might be enough)

Good luck!

Essentially you are saying the same as pre-internet days: "I have a great business idea and I just need someone to back me."

Which is all very well, it may be a great business idea, but you are going to have to get your eggs in a basket before anyone (government, bank or private investment) is going to do anything for you.

These are some of the many questions you should be prepared to answer:

Do you have a business plan?
Have you researched this niche and seen if there is anything similar around?
Are you encroaching on anyone's intellectual property?
What is your evidence that there is a demand for this app?
What is your 'moat'? (In other words, what is to stop some vibe coder copying your idea one day after you put it out there?

(I'm retired self-employed in an internet-related branch.)

Yeah if it's a niche product you better be connected to that niche yourself - I work for a company that started as a startup in a kind of niche place and it's currently holding a huge part of the market it's in, but the owners knew exactly what and how they wanted to do it when they started it up due to knowing the market, if that makes sense.

Absolutely. My work was in an area I had a lot of experience with and it combined several sets of skills or experience I had, which made it more difficult for others to compete.

Retired eh?

Sounds like you could have time to write some front page content?...
