Yup, got a genuine lump in my throat at this news. Apparently it was very sudden, he was at the IFTA's last night and everything. Lads who are chairing analysis teams could learn a lot from him. He never made it about him, just chucked the odd, knowing grenade into Giles, Dunphy and Brady with an excerpt from some random article, and let it all kick off while pretending he had nothing to do with it.

Yes perfect anchor man and got the best out of the lads. Nothing comes close to him on UK channels . Absolute gent and sad his retirement cut short.

May he rest in peace

The RTE panel was always something I enjoyed watching

The new lad, Dara I think, does alright but Bill was the undisputed best

Darragh Maloney is very good, a long way to go to match Bill though.

RIP Bill

A great anchorman.

He wouldn't have been that old, would he?

76. Barely got to enjoy his retirement, the poor man.

Oh, he mustn't be the bloke I am thinking about.....grey haired chap, around 50ish?

This chap here:

Yes.....that's the one I was thinking off, Prev.

He is excellent.

Aye, time flies and if you didn't watch RTE coverage regularly it wouldn't have been so obvious that he was bearing down on 80 years. The man has been a fixture of our football coverage forever. When I was young, I didn't have much interest apart from the '90 and '94 World Cups, but he was the face of that for us, as well as all the RTE Champions League coverage over the years, which was far superior to anything Sky has ever put out during or since.
