Big Duncan on the sidelines....

Does anyone have any stats on headed goals during Martinez' tenure, compared to our headed goal stats under other managers? I ask this, because I can always remember Everton getting their fair share of headed goals, goals which made a difference, goals which were the difference between winning, losing and drawing.

Now that we spend 80% of the match passing the ball from side to side in our own half, and when we do seldomly attack the opposition, it's always breathtaking, attacking football that is played on the floor, so we are suffering because we have no attacking threat from headers, and I think this puts us at a serious disadvantage.

Headers are going nowhere, clubs will still be scoring and defending with headers in 300 years time.

This thread is not intended for an anti Martinez agenda. Please take your nonsense to another thread.

The presence of Dunc WOULD raise the crowd though.

At best, a temporary effect.
Nobody could reasonably expect the crowd to get wildly excited week in, week out at seeing Ferguson on the touch line.
And to be brutally honest, I am still to be convinced that he is having any tangible effect in training on the likes of Lukaku or any of the other forwards.
DaveK might have been unduly scathing about him, but until I see any genuine evidence of a 'Ferguson Factor' then sorry, he's there more from possibly misplaced sentiment.

Sometimes it's arbitrary though mate. If we're losing 1-0 at home with 2 minutes to go, would it really matter who stood on the touchline and waved his arms around?

That's the point I was making. There's not much of a difference you can make at that point in a game. The presence of Dunc WOULD raise the crowd though.
It's tantamount to Martinez saying he cant do the job. A complete non-starter. It's up to the players to get the crowd on its feet, not a junior member of the coaching staff.

HAHAHA. Sorry, but David Moyes brought him back to the club, and Roberto Martinez promoted him. I'm pretty sure he's a good coach. I'm also pretty sure he's an Everton Icon.

If you don't think he can lift the Goodison crowd, then you need to go and lie down.

Why's that mate? Could Martinez not tell him what to say? LOL, "Junior member" he's your man Martinez' promoted employee.

How often would it realistically work though? Ferguson steps up to the sideline and gets instructions across and they dont work and we get beat/draw anyway. It has the law of diminishing returns built into it.

We need better players, not adding another voice on the sidelines.

I'm not saying it would magically result in us winning all our games. We love Duncan though, and I'm sure the effect he has on the crowd could make a difference. It might only make a difference once or twice like :P

I understand your reasoning mate. It's perfectly reasonable to search for the extra % at home given the effect the Goodison crowd can have on the outcome of games.

Dave mate your just fuming because Ferguson is more thought of by the fans than the manager is.
Any of you Ferguson doughters go on YouTube now and watch his documentary, Rooney one of the best English players for a long time basically says he wouldent be the player he is today without ferguson's influence.
You just have to open your eyes to see how much the players and especially the young players look up to him.
If lukaku had any sense bout him he'd be following Ferguson round like a lap dog because there hasn't been a better target man that I can think of.
So yeah I agree that he should have more influence on the touch line.

Yeah, of course he is for many. But where does that take us? Once the results start to not fit the bill in terms of the script do we move to bring another 'legend' to the sideline and see if that does the trick? Maybe Sharp standing on the sideline one week, then Bob Latchford?

It's all about players at the end of the day carrying out manager's instructions. If the players are good enough we dont need anyone but them to get the crowd lifted. Any other solution is just a circus act. Bottom line is that we need better players into this squad. Then leave it to them to create the atmosphere.

Sure, he might help lift the crowd, but are you seriously telling me that in the event of us being 0-3 down at home that Ferguson appearing on the touch line would raise the roof ?

I think you perhaps are the one in need of a lie down. Ferguson is not the Demi-God some on here make him out to be. A good servant in his time, but this label of 'legend' whenever his name is mentioned is totally overused and therefore devalued.

It's not a circus, and we shouldn't be using Duncan, who by all accounts is taking coaching very seriously, as a gimmick to get fans going at the game. It's not hard to sing a song at a match is it?
