I'm not positing a view on the McGann's here, but I find that post a bit weird.

You don't think making a wrong choice could be classed as a mistake? NB a mistake, not an accident.
I know I said wouldn’t comment again but I will answer you.
Leaving your kids alone whilst you go out is not a mistake by any stretch ..... it’s a conscious choice. Unfortunately in this instance the results were tragic.
I acknowledge I may be coming across as very judgmental but I stick by what I’m saying.

But mistake doesn't imply NOT a conscious choice. In fact it implies the opposite. You'd never call stubbing your toe "a mistake", it's an accident.

Coke replacing the original flavour with New Coke was a conscious decision. It was still a mistake. It wasn't an accident.

a conscious choice can be a mistake.
how are you not getting this?

As opposed to wizard trained doctors?

Also what are these two doctors saying? That using cold meds to dope kids is cool? Or have they found a body I don't know of and said there's no evidence of drugs in the body?
What's worse is that two medical professionals gave Calpol to their child to help sedate her (let her sleep) when it's known to have no sedating properties.

It is terrible that they've lost a child and that shouldn't be ignored, but it doesn't provide a blanket of immunity from questioning their moral stance as parents.

It was neglect on their behalf.

The problem I think is that people are too quick to judge on others when they have done similar acts of neglect.

I see parents all the time give their child money and tell them to go away or go to the shops and buy sweets just for 5 minutes of peace. I’ve seen many parents smack their child for behaving badly because it was the norm when they were growing up (which is now classed as child abuse)

any child in the country could be kidnapped just for walking down the street on the way to school

the degree of neglect by the McCanns does not justify the vilification they have received imo

The Portuguese police are bloody gash having just read a few bits on what this suspect was up to.

You make some valid points, however not many three year old children walk to school alone for an hour and a half albeit with apparent checks in between.

Nor should we be nullifying their own failings because of the actions of others; if anything, they as professionals (a GP) should be acting in the highest regard.

It's tragic what happened to them and their child and for that they have my heartfelt sympathy, but I stand by the fact that they acted in a severely negligent way.

That doesn't imply they were complicit or they are to 'blame' for her disappearance, however their actions in conjunction with her age increased the risk to her.

In reality, the blame should be on the person who abducted her (and sadly any other likely offences) and hopefully that person(s) will be caught and prosecuted.

Did they really dope her? Never knew that.
Apparently, it's a mixture of what her father said to the press and apparent comments made to the police at the time, which meant it became a line of enquiry.

By that, the Portuguese followed the avenue that they may have killed her with an overdose - all completely unproven. However, it seemed to stick around.

Calpol has no sedative effect and they're doctors so the likelyhood of administrating an overdose, which would need large quantities, are very slim indeed.

Nevertheless, it has been something that has (fairly or unfairly) tarred them ever since.
