The difference between fruit and vegetables is (I think) that with fruit, seed is set inside of the fruit (like an apple, orange, grapefruit, etc). the strawberry might appear to have seed on the outside, but really that seed is encased in the flesh. With vegetables, seed is set on the outside, usually in pods, although vegetables are usually harvested before the plant goes to seed.

Therefore, aubergine, sweet peppers and tomatoes are fruits, although we treat them like vegetables.
