Baxter Pens Pro Deal – News Archive – News – evertonfc.com - The Official Website of Everton Football Club

Everton youngster Jose Baxter is the latest player to commit his future to the Club.
Just two weeks after fellow academy product Jack Rodwell signed his new contract, talented midfielder Baxter has followed suit as he penned a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Baxter only turned 17 last month and is the youngest player ever to start a game for the Toffees.
He achieved that feat when lining up for the Blues at West Brom in August.
Previously the versatile attacking midfielder had progressed through Everton's academy, having been at the Club since he was six years old.
After suffering a back injury before Christmas, Baxter has been figuring regualarly for the reserves and appeared on the bench against Aston Villa and Bolton recently.
He also skippered England under 17s in the Algarve Tournament last month.
After putting pen to paper on the new contract, Bootle-born Baxter exclusively told evertonTV: "I'm feeling great. It's a dream come true to sign a contract for Everton.
"To be offered a contract was a great feeling but actually signing it was something else. I have to keep working hard now and make sure I earn another one in the future."

So is he an attacking midfielder ala Ossie or Cahill or a striker? Me's confused.

Or can he play the wings like he can on Footy Manager lol

Understand concerns regarding contract length, but it offers the lad an extra incentive which he recognises in saying;

"I have to keep working hard now and make sure I earn another one in the future."

Also, if he has any faith in his ability he would be foolish to sign a 5 year deal, why? He wont be getting paid much, and rightly so. Everton wont want it to get to his head too early. In a years time, he'll be given a longer contract on better pay.

As a kid he was banging them in from up front but recently he's been playing in midfield. 1 thing that I noticed almost immediately was his vision & ability to pick out a pass, he was spraying it around the park into space in pre-season & as a kid who had grown up as a centre forward, I wasn't expecting that at all.

Seems to be someone who can play all the way across midfield & behind the forwards, I'm not sure what his finishing is like but based on his history I'd assume it's pretty good so might still do it as a forward. It's good to keep versatile at his age because it will improve his overall game as he develops & then will slot into a position that suits him/the team best in the future

think it has more to do with the legality of signing a five year deal when you're 17

That thought crossed my mind.

I mean, a 17 year old can not sign a contract without parental/guardian approval...

... But Rodwell signed a 5 year deal.

Awesome news!
I guess I was the only one worried Rodders and Baxter wouldn't sign. I should have more faith in our guys.
