That's true but we've seen Naismith in the number 10 role enough times to know that's where he has to play.
It is Naismith's best position but not sure him playing there gets the best out of Lukaku, an on-form Barkley seems to work with him better.

Think it too dogmatic to say "x should always play and always in this position" - too much depends on a players form, fitness and the opposition strengths/weaknesses.

A diamond seems to clog the center and Barkley plays better with more space. It's still a useful formation to play against the right teams.
We could use Coleman and brines to provide the width and still have decent cover from the not so wide midfield men. And have the goals cores in and around the box, noisy, kone, eto, and lukaku. Just a thought.

Rather than going for the "best midfield" how about picking two players for each position? Squad game these days.

Barkley and Besic are the future and will eventually be first on the teamsheet...however, the people writing off the likes of Barry, Gibson etc because of a few poor performances need to have a word with themselves.
Barkley scores a worldie and Besic has a good game = everyone else is finished

How about a 4-3-1-2 formation?

Lukaku and Mirallas as CF's, allowing their bond to be fully utilized. Naismith behind them creating the space with his work rate for Barkley to run into.

Really think it would work a charm.

Robles
Coleman Stones Alcaraz Baines
McCarthy Barkley Besic
Mirallas Naismith
Lukaku

tis the season for the tree and all that. get our full backs operating as wing backs to provide the width with plenty of defensive cover from mccarthy and besic.

jagielka and howard get dropped for their abysmal form (y) barry the same. form not rep!

I think the team selection depends on the opposition and circumstance (home/away)

At home against pretty much everyone and away against lower half i'd play

mccarthy barkley
mirallas naismith pienaar (still best option on the left)
lukaku

against chelsea, city, arsenal and maybe united at home and top half away (due to their ability to break at pace - plus the quality forwards they have that can finish) i'd be a bit more defensive

mccarthy besic
mirallas naismith pienaar
lukaku

for europe i would include both barry and eto'o as potential starters

Naismith has to play for me. In that number 10 role his movement creates so much space for others. If you'e got Naisy in the number 10 and Barkley deep, his movement will allow Ross to run from deep exactly like what happened last night.

I think from now on Ross plays deep or not at all. He should be play in our team so I'd start him deep with McCarthy and/or Besic.

Oh yes. :coffee:

I don't know what it is at the moment.

A player is out of sorts / out of form

Then "he should be sold"

Its utterly ridiculous. :coffee:

Its like this innane booing too.

Often that drop of form is fitness related. Small knocks etc.suddenly some say they want someone sold! Nonsense :coffee:

I'd be surprised if Martinez doesn't see McCarthy and Besic as his long term central midfield pairing.

I'd like to see Besic played as much as possible, with Barry playing against the teams at the top of the table.
