Are we missing a trick with Leighton Baines?

What to do with Baines

At his best he was easily the best attacking full back in the country. He's an everton icon and his a class act off the pitch as well as on it.
His performances over the last 2 seasons have dropped alarmingly though. I would hate to see him stay past his sellby date and be a booboy victim.hopefully koeman can revitalise him

For me it's a huge no. As mentioned by others, his strength is working with a like minded partner who lets him overlap and run into space.

I simply could not see him flourishing in the first instance as I doubt his movement off the ball is up to the standard, nor is his hold up play.

Too much like Martinez with the square-peg and round-hole philosophy. If anything, he'd be better suited moving to the centre of midfield.

Yet still I genuinely don't believe that's a sensible option either. He's a top left back on his day: let's simply concentrate on getting back to that!

@AndyC

Sorry mate, not for me thanks.
I look at some players, like Barkley and ( sob ) Stones and can see them playing in different positions, but I can't see Baines at left-wing working.

Going forward from deep, he's ace, but a fair amount of the work expected of a winger involves having your back to goal and bringing other players into play, or turning on a sixpence ( showing my age there ) with the ball while showing great close control, before bombing past your marker or drawing a foul. I don't see those as skills which are really in Baines' locker.

I do agree with you on his defensive duties, much as I love him, it's what stops him from being really world class. I think, well hope, a different coaching regime will help him there, after all, you're never to old to learn stuff.

Like Jagielka the World Cup broke him. It showed up limitations that we'd not seen before and shattered his confidence. It changed both of them from really good players to just good players. Neither stand out now unfortunately.....not a popular view but perhaps it's time to move both on whilst we can still command a fee?
Opposing teams know exactly what Baines is going to do so it's made him less effective. Sorry state of affairs all told. Hopefully Big Ron can revitalise him.
