Anyone else miss playing in Europe?

Look at Citys attendance today, obviously European games aren't that popular, even when you play entertaining attacking football. Liverpool fans will see how their claims of being wonderful fans the best in the world are ridiculous, when they play Red Star.

I don't miss the drubbings against obscure opposition, but I do miss the excitement of playing teams like Fiorentina or Lyon.

The question is academic, though, because we obviously won't be playing in Europe next season. Not unless we shock the world and do exceptionally well in one of the domestic cup competitions this season.

My problem is, we’re always going to finish 7th, so therefore to even get into Europe now, we’d have to play 6 games.

Look at Burnley, their run this year consisted of Aberdeen, Basaksehir and Olympiakos.
That isn’t easy.

I love Europe, but I know we need a bigger stronger squad because they’ve saturated the Europa pool so badly, we’d have to have so many games.

Fingers crossed we sneak in and sign more quality this year.

But please, PLEASE, not like last season.
Qualifying is ridiculous and hopefully the latest proposal for a 3rd competition is being done to address that and not just to continue to make Europe more of a money grab. Honestly it may not make some teams happy but just make it a series of one offs instead of two leg fixtures.

On a personal level, I miss the games because of the atmosphere around them and meeting up with other blues (Nuremberg, Benfica, Wolfsburg, errm Atalanta) and because it gives me a chance to get a decent flight over and seat at Goodison with no chance of the date being changed.

It also provides a level of excitement about the season like any cup run (apart from dead legs against Krasnodar).

At a club level we need to be a lot stronger and more consistent over a period of time (seasons) before we start to look forward to European ties again. The likelihood however is that we will at some point squeeze into 6th or 7th place and have the following season screwed up by early cup ties and fixture changes.

I do miss the away trips and the home games from 14/15. I was thinking before the start of the season when Burnley had to play their three rounds of qualifying that it was best to avoid it this season and give Silva a better preparation for start of the premier league but with our so called easy start to the season going really badly I don't think we'd be any worse off if it was us.

I've compensated for Everton not being in Europe by booking up a trip to Eintracht Frankfurt v Apollon Limassol at the end of October. When we played Limassol at Goodison last season I was travelling up on the train from London with some of their UK based fans and kept in touch with them after. Spoke with them before the group stage draw the other week and they said if I wanted to do any of their away games they'd sort me a ticket.

Those Wolfsburg games were great. We were so clinical against a super talented side.

That Osman goal against Larissa? Wow.

Arteta goal against Fiorentina. Goodison almost fell to its core.

I would love to get GP back to its atmosphere of the games against Fiorentina, Villarreal and Utd.

Sad how the life has been sucked out of the fans post Moyes.

Martinez, Koeman, the ownership and players have really fractured the fanbase imo.

was thinking this today you know, im glad we never snuck into it in the end last season ahead of Burnley as much as i enjoy the home games and the odd away it would have been a bit much

would love to get back there next season tho

Think 7th is do-able

I certainly miss Europe.

Football for me is about so much more than what actually happens on the pitch for ninety minutes, which is just as well given the shenanigans at this club for the past twenty five years :(, and despite the shambles that was the match itself I had an absolute ball in Lyon with the travellin’ Blues last year.

I wish I was planning a European road trip this year.
