Angus Kinnear

This new nonsense about a manager signing off players.

I would love to know whether it is:

1. Yes, I love this player and all over him signing
2. He’s ok, not my preference but we need bodies and I’m sure I can get something out of him if we can’t get x or y
3. Yeh I can see why you’re buying him. Not sure he’s ready but has potential

Very easy for the CEO to say all 3 are signed off by a manager but a marked difference
It seems like away of splitting the blame/credit across three areas rather than just Moyes or Nick Hammond as an individual.

Instead of trying to factor in every different angle that it played out.

We could make it simple, and say we went into the market not exactly prepared for "No" responses.

We didn't factor in our current appeal, with our target portfolio.

Atleast give it til after Afcon, when changes are forced, to look more into the right or wrongs.

Or just give them the season, that should really be the basis.

I think Grealish depends on 2 factors

Fee (has to be 20m or less)
Wages (how do we offer him a wage of 150k where that's acceptable to him?)

If we qualified for Europe, that definitely would help our chances of offering a competitive salary.

I would actually worry as to whether getting Europe would reduce our chance of being able to afford him. UEFA regs are a bit tighter than ours. I do wonder if we need a few years of settling, figure out our finances, then go for it.

This is concern born from no knowledge of how it all works though. Are UEFA spending regs based upon current year, or previous year?

Does this make sense?

Counter point to that mate is a lot of our first choice signing last summer turned us down because they wanted European Football.

We should always aspire to be in Europe as a minimum at this club.

What age did Barry (Gareth) play for us up to?
Good point, and Barrys ‘football intelligence’ was always a more significant attribute than his pace, same with Gana, only for now at least he’s still has the mobility to get around the pitch effectively.
Big difference with both of them is how much they cost - both in wages and transfers.
While pace isn’t exactly Grealishs main attribute either, you don’t see anywhere near as many wingers playing deep into their 30s at the top level as you do midfielders or defenders.

That all ignores the rest of the world though...There will be others in for his services, which will drive the price up to some extent.

I think it will be tough to sign him without European football.
Of course, there no guarantee he won’t have better offers, ANY chance we have of signing him relies on a combo of where we finish, how much he enjoys his time here, and how willing he would be to see out the last 2-3 years of his top flight career trousering £30m if there were offers of over £30m available elsewhere 🤷‍♂️

Oh yeah, of course I want us to be in Europe, I want us to be at the top level of everything. I was just wondering if doing so would affect our ability to spend.

I’m not sure that the CEO should have a say in players. They are running a commercial business which happens to be football. The role is so much more than just football… that’s what the specialists roles are for.
We are in a different world now due to the commercial opportunities relating to the club

I'm sure that he shouldn't!

His only role , if any , should be with regards to the contracts.

There's treated with kid gloves and there's whatever we are doing right now not giving them any match time at all.

Rohl seemed to at least have the trust of Moyes to come in and play before the fitness issues hit him.

I think Barry has shown giving the new lads a bit of trust might be more helpful than holding them back to bench appearances or whatever little football Dibling and Aznou are seeing.
The less options Moyes has to choose from, the less he will dither

Still a long way to go this season. However I don’t think you can underestimate that Jack I’d enjoying his football again. I might be wrong, but he doesn’t strike me as someone who is motivated by money. He already has enough money. My guess is if we secure European football for next season Jack will sign.

31 games ago we were 1pt off the relegation zone

We are now 5pts off 2nd place

If that was offered at the time, we'd of bitten our hands off for it. Now it's happened, it's just not acceptable.

Not even a season worth of games and the fanbase is caving.
What's not acceptable? Our current position? Of course it's acceptable. We've just won heroically at United having found new ways to shoot ourselves in the head. That's a novel development and has pushed us up to 11th. That's where many of us would have seen us. Results ebb and flow - we might lose today - but accepting this natural ebb at this stage of squad development is why many of us who want to see a new manager installed next summer still think it preferable for Moyes to complete this season. If we lose today, people will grumble about the manager. If we win, people will hail him. But over the longer term of the season, we'll likely finish plus or minus three places of where we sit today. That'll do for this season and means the club has a decision to make in the summer depending on their ambitions and who is available. If Moyes hits the upper level of that range or outperforms that - wins at other taboo grounds or lands a pot - then that's a different discussion and he will, no doubt, stay on.

This is whole point though, we were never going to be wowing the world after 31 games since relegation fodder.

You look at things at the end of the season.
Progression v's Expectation

But who's demanding that we wow the world right now? I'm more than satisfied with turning up at taboo grounds and actually getting off the bus. We saw that on Monday. That's real progress.
