Toffee Tim but Dim. Made the difference tonight. He must stayWe need to look to move him on. If we want fast paced football we need athletic players and he is one of the slowest and least aggressive in the league.

Agreed. People getting carried away. He will continue to be a passenger for most games he plays. He did very well for the winner, but take that away then the what changed the game was having an extra body in the middle and not specifically Gomes. People raving about him as if he came on and ran the game. He did OK at best.Oh look at you all getting fooled again.
Inspired our two man midfield tonight - made all the difference imoAgreed. People getting carried away. He will continue to be a passenger for most games he plays. He will have another crap game soon and all those saying class etc will be brought down to earth like we always do!
I just don’t see what others do with him. He does so little 90% of the time.
But id argue what changed it was having a third person in there. I distinctly remember Gomes making two stupid fouls, being weak on the ball and playing safe/negative after coming on. However we did have more bodies in the middle and be able to use the ball more.Inspired our two man midfield tonight - made all the difference imo
Exactly we need three in there he created our winner, in the build up - he has that touch of class & guile a playmaker.'....But id argue what changed it was having a third person in there. Credit where it’s due for the winner he kept it well and chose a good pass, but it shouldn’t paper of the cracks.
Changing to a three made the difference for me, not gomes. He will be his usual, slow, average self soon enough.
Both a credit and a criticism of Benitez that be made the change but hasn’t yet realised we need to start that way.
We need players who can pass a ball, we have been woefully short in that regard this season. Sigurdsson and James have plenty of critics on here, and lord knows I've taken plenty of shots at Sigurdsson over the years, but without them and Gomes we've been expecting Iwobi and Townsend to be our creators and we've all seen the results. I keep my fingers crossed Gomes can maintain some sort of form and stay fit, and I can't believe how poor our midfield is that I'm saying this!Lost the ball cheaply a couple of times within 10 minutes of coming on.
But, you can see what brings to the team when it comes off. Good touch and close control that gets him away from players, and he retained the ball well in the middle of the park to get the ball out to Gray. There’s a player in there, but just don’t think he’ll ever achieve the level of consistency needed.

He's not the best passer but he's pretty much our best passer, which says a lot about the state we are in at the moment. Consistency is a big issue and I don't see where he fits in Benitez's preferred 4-4-2, but who knows, this season has been mental!Yeah, I’m not sure incisive passing is his greatest strength though. He plays a lot of over cooked through balls. For me his best attributes are when he gets on the ball and uses a bit of strength, touch and technique to take a player out the game, as we saw tonight for the Gray goal.
But he offers something different to Allen and Doucoure, and also he always seems to look better off the bench, which points to his fitness/speed issues. As I said, there’s a player in there, but he’s wildly inconsistent.
I won't get carried away but he looked tonight like he was somewhere near to the form when he first joined us.Inspired our two man midfield tonight - made all the difference imo
