Didn’t think anything of it at first, the he rolled on his back and even from the upper bullens I could see his foot hanging off. Felt physically sick and lost all interest in the game

The treatment of players is different gravy to years ago.
My dad was telling me that he was working a game at Anfield ( he was a copper ) when a player broke his leg.
That player was left on a bed in a corridor on his own to wait for an ambulance and me dad was the only person who talked to him. The player was in bits knowing his career was over. Incredible really.

Physical recovery and mental recovery are not the same thing.

Gomes was considered to be a mentally weak person who couldnt handle the press and supporter critcism of his performances at Barcelona and let his game go to pot, medical advances over last 30 years wont help his mental recovery

Overcoming a serious injury like this isn't as simple as being mentally strong. Many a good, strong-willed athlete has regressed severely after injuries of this magnitude.
