Grossly unfair. He was quality all season last year, and then he's broken his leg and is still finding his way back in a system he's not suited to, surrounded by dross.

His form this season didn't look much different now and before the injury...

He's already kinda alluded to having him as the Pirlo type pivot player.

I think if anyone who could make that work would be Carlo.

I think you make a good point and , prior to his injury, it is a role that I could have seen him playing but he has been so off the pace since the return that he simply is not worth his place in the team.

Just making do until the season is over.

Our centre midfield has pretty much only got 3 consistent injury free players - Siggy, Davies, Gomes - in the squad.

The rest are either injured or don't suit.

We know this guy has quality, we know he had a horrific injury that he did wonders to return from so quickly, we know we have no other real option but to play him every game in this gruelling schedule.

We all also knew his limitations and why he needs pairing with a more defensive player with legs in the middle of the park but yeh turn on him for playing with Davies and declining Sigurdsson.

I think if you pair him with a Gana/more defensive player, he has to do more as a threat.

He's only scored 1 goal for the club.

People underestimate what Gana did with the ball in terms of moving it forward too. You don't get into a CL challenging team if you're a complete waste of space in possession. People gave Gomes a lot of credit last year when I still think Gana was at least as good in possession. And that was with Gueye doing all the dirty work and essentially freeing Gomes to do whatever he pleased with the ball.

Barcelona's transfer business has been complete crap since the window they bought Suarez Rakitic and ter Stegen. Seriously go look at it. Big names but about 4 players have given them more than one good season. Combine that with the fact that Gomes basically never was in favor there and it is clear that Barca signing him means little now.

Yeah i'm obviously taking it to an extreme but it's true. People do it all the time aswell. We want him to do a good job. Neither crab passing nor aimless 'hollywood' passes are doing a good job, so why use them as the examples? There's an enormous middle ground that he's just pretending doesn't exist here, where Gomes plays some decent forward passes, and helps a transition from front to back. I'm not expecting him to ping 50 yard balls to peoples feet every time he gets it, or thread balls through the eye of a needle, just be reasonably progressive and reliable with the ball. I've said before, if you only get a goal or assist every 20 games, and you're a complete non-entity defensively, then you have to make sure you're at least keeping the midfield ticking over by moving the ball around and controlling the tempo. If you don't do that you're not only not contributing, you're actually a hindrance. That's honestly where I'd put Gomes at the moment, he's so useless defensively that because he's not passing well he is literally doing more harm than good.

he was all show and no substance before the injury. Nothing’s changed.
