We all have had awaydays that stand out for reasons beyond football one that springs to mind for me was Coventry away 19th August 1989.
We left Liverpool probably about 11 oclock 4 off us in a Jaguar that had seen better days,It was the first game of the season so you are full of hope and at the time we were still a reasonable team but definitely on a downward slope.
We made good time and arrived around Highfield Road about 2 but the day took a turn for the worse as the car broke down and we couldnt get a thing out of it ,it was completely bolloxed. We decided to go to the game and worry about the car afterwards.
The game itself was a typical let down and Coventry comfortably beat us 2-0.
After the game we headed back to the car with the hope that the car would have magically repaired itself ,no such luck.
We decided that there was only one course of action which was go to nearest pub to discuss our options we were still there 5 hours later as these things take time. We realised we needed either the AA or RAC or such like but as none of us were members this was a problem. One of the lads said his sister was in the AA but as she was not with us this really was not much help. We rang them anyway blagging that the sister was there so they said they would need her to sign the forms and produce paperwork when we got back to Liverpool.
As the Pub was busy we approached a few girls in the the pub and asked them to sign the paperwork and pretend to be our mates sister. We found a girl to do it so we just had to wait for our breakdown truck which picked up our car and let us sit in his cab.Luckily they were unable fix the car as none of us were in a fit state to drive it.
About half ten we were ready to go but by this time we were starving so asked the fella to stop at a chippy and an off licence as we needed some sustenance for the way home he duly obliged.
We got back to Liverpool about half one but the fella still needed to see some paperwork which was a problem as we never had any. We got him to park in a car park in town and done a runner. I did feel sorry for the driver but needs must what else could we do?

Anybody else got any strange awaydays?

Barnes coaches used to run from the Crown alehouse to the away games in the 70's and 80's.

I think it was Derby County away, we came back from the match to find the driver comatose drunk and snoring loudly on the back seat.

One of the lad's drove us back to Liverpool, and we even had a decent whip-round for the driver as we headed down the East Lancs road.

lol boss that mate lol ;)

Went to the FA Cup Semi at Highbury against Southampton in 1984 with my mate, his dad and a load of his mates.

All the adults got properly filled in on the way to the ground by Arsenal fans.

They only left me and my mate alone, as we were kids at the time.

None of them would go to the hozzy, as they didn't want to miss the match !

Another time, my mate got his arse ripped to shreds by a Police Alsatian, walking back from a night game at Old Trafford under a so called Police escort lol

Everton V Luton. Villa Park 1985 F.A. cup semi-final. Walking down the street made up to be walking with all the other Blues as this was in Birmingham. So chuffed. 2 minutes later my Mom is grabbing me from behind and yelling at me for wandering off. We weren't going to the game. We were going to Aston Hall, a local tourist attraction. I was only 12 too. Gutted. Great 2 minutes though.

This is going to be one of the most entertaining threads on here! I'll gather my thoughts of Anderlect, taking penalties on the pitch at El Madrigal on the morning of the Champions League Qualifier, numerous extra night stay overs up and down the country for a variety of reasons, bumping into players who probably should have been somewhere else at the time but were as lost as me at the time! I'll watch with this interest and share a tale or two.

Travelled down to Luton with a few mates in 1986 for an FA cup game, went in two cars and as we were close to Luton on M1 a stone hit my windscreen an it shattered into a million pieces and had to be knocked out. We carried on to the game and abandoned the car in a quiet spot and decided to worry about it after the game. We managed to rescue a 2-2 draw after we were 2-0 down with inchy grabbing the equaliser and had great support that day. Managed to find the car where we had left it but as we weren't in the AA or RAC and I don't think they had autoscreen or the likes 30 years ago so drove back with no front screen all the way back with two mates crouched in the back behind the front seats trying to keep warm. I wore sunglasses all the way back not cos it was sunny but to keep the flies out of me eyes - we laugh about it now though when we meet up and reminisce, great days!

Went to Notts Forest about 86ish and the coach driver couldnt make it, Amberline I think it was, so he got this old coach driver to step in on the day. Which was great at first but he was more accustomed to taking old people on coach tours not footy fans. He took it upon himself to take the scenic route, and didnt seem to understand we had to be there for 3 and the quickest route was the way to go. Crossing this crazy route over Peak District he kept slowing down, getting on his microphone and giving it "ladies and gentlemen, if you look to your left".... blah blah blah coming out with all this historical stuff, which for the right group of people would of been great, at first it was funny, missing the kick off by about 10 minutes didnt go down well!

Plus of course Bolton in the show 1st Jan ? 1978 had to walk back from town to Maghull!!!!
Remember it well. A crowd of us went with a crew of Citeh fans whose own away game had been postponed. They had hired a van and instead of leaving it idle offered to give us a lift to Bolton. The snow was atrocious and the terracing was diabolical. It was no wonder the game was postponed at half time. Took us nearly three hours to drive back home which was only 20 miles up the road.

It was also the game that Peter Reid - then Bolton - wrecked his knee. But as we all know he came back stronger and on to become an Everton legend.

my older brother, and his mates had some calamitous away trips - 3 punctures to an away game v Wolves in the days of remould tyres just about got home - one of his mates was adamant were Crystal palaces ground was they parked by the white city dog track -in London floodlights and all that - My older brother and his bearded mate being sold tickets at the last minute by a tout v Carlisle in the FA cup only to find when they looked at them at the turnstyle they wee Boys pen tickets - they were all games they got in to and won !
