I don't think that the personnel we put out matters too much. It's more to do with shape, desire, attitude and effectiveness. We're bringing subs on and they're unable to make an impact because our pattern of play remains predictable and unsubtle.

A couple of seasons ago Baines was getting to the byeline on a regular basis and whipping quality balls in. For whatever reason he's hanging back a lot more or running towards the box himself. Bily is capable of putting fantastic crosses in, but he mostly comes inside himself to try and grab a goal. On the opposite flank it sounds like Hibbo got forward well and had a really good game today but, with due respect, he's unlikely to provide too many assists. Pienaar is another who prefers to drift infield rather than beating the fullback. So where will the service come from?

Because we're so narrow the opposition rearguard is able to remain compact, meaning that our lone striker is often surrounded by three or four defenders. It doesn't help that we're so static upfront and, especially in Saha's case, stand rooted waiting for the ball.

We've been playing the same way for atleast four years. The likes of Blackburn, Wolves, Stoke and Birmingham have figured it out and are now beating us at our own game. It's time to approach things with a bit of intelligence and to try some tweaks to help us to regain our edge. I don't think we particularly need any new players. I think we need to make better use of what we've currently got.

Redknapp has converted Bale to a left winger at Spurs with fantastic effect. If we're chasing a game, why doesn't Moyes throw Coleman on as a right winger and tell him to get at the full back? He would put ball after ball into the box. Arteta and Fellaini have both had purple patches infront of goal. Why don't we switch things round so that Cahill covers defensively ala Scholes or Van Bommell, whilst Mikel or Marouane present the opposition with a different problem.

The gaffer has stuck with one up top in both matches. Saha and Beckford looked like they could strike up a partnership in pre-season. Why not sacrifice a midfielder and go 4-4-2?

I imagine that we'll steel our resolve and start grinding out results again before too long. That's all well and good but, with the players at our disposal, I would like to see us play with more flair and adventure.

If you write the entire squad names on a piece of paper and gave it to Jose Mourinho asking him to pick out a strongest everton team, this it would be most likely:

.......................................................................................Howard.................................................................................................................

Coleman......................................Heitinga...............................................Jagielka..................................................................Baines

...............................................................Fellaini...........................Arteta(c)....................................................................................

subs:

But Moyes would rather............................

Amazed at the lack of Johnny Heitinga love in this thread..

After Pienaar probably our best player last season. Him and Jags CB for me, all day.

this team right here is ace. we can do damage with that team. distin is a great option off the bench. would provide solid cover in case of injury, and we can always push johhny up to mid if we need the extra defender.
shame this team doesnt come out every game.

I honestly can't believe that any Evertonian's starting eleven would be devoid of one Johnny Heitinga. I know Pienaar won POY last year but Heitinga could have just as easily won it.

You have to have Heitinga in there. DM or CB, but he's got to be in there.

Howard
Coleman--Jagielka--Distin/Heitinga*--Baines
Anichebe/Bilyaletdinov*--Arteta--Rodwell/Fellaini*--Peinaar
Cahill
Beckford/Saha/Yakubu*

*based on form. The bolded names are the players that would start if it was today, based on their form.

A matter of semantics. Whether with Heitinga or with Distin, centre half is the least of the worries.

Distin has been one of our best players in both games. He's not the issue. Bily was awful today. Osman was non-existent last week. Anyone that thinks we don't need Donovan out wide on the right is high.

I'm not sure that I agree with the notion of deciding on a best XI, and sticking with it. When we've got "squad players" of the quality of Rodwell, Coleman, Beckford etc, I think some squad rotation is essential. There has to be some flexibility. When a player's in form, don't leave him out. Not playing Rodwell yesterday seems like a mistake.

I agree though we shouldn't just be making changes for the sake of it. It's about looking to see what works, and running with that.

And I agree that there's an air of uncertainty at the moment. Who should be playing on the right ? Where should Bily / Osman be playing ? If Saha's our number one striker why didn't he start yesterday ? It's disappointing that after having had so many players available in pre-season, there seem to be so many unanswered questions.

Haven't read the whole thread so apologies if this has already been said.

Can't really fathom why Rodwell hasn't has more of a run. Not sure why we're sticking with Neville/Heitinga in midfield when we're playing a poor Wolves side at home. Surely Rodwell/Fellaini/Arteta with Pienaar left and Osman/Bily/Anichebe right would have been a better selection? Back 4 seems OK, but surely a home game against a team that is likely to struggle is the perfect game to give Coleman a run?

I think our system is very rigid im begining to think itsmaybe not the players but the isolation of certain areas of the team, i think its predictable how we play to be honest, Wolves fought their way back into the game yesteray and got a lucky break, there mentality one the game yesterday, after 70 mins we we're onlyintrested in seeing it out and yet again got sucker punched.

Yes , lad . I feel Beckford was more the problem today , and actually , Timmy won a more than average share of headers , knock-down's etc .

That for me is the problem mate, we shouldn't be picking a striker for his ability to win headers/knock downs from long balls thrown forward. our game shoud be about short passing and running off the ball.
I know what your saying though, under moyes i can't see this being our regular style of play. maybe in patches.:(

No , mate , with respect . THE PROBLEM is our having 3 centre forwards , NONE of whom can play 30 games in the Premier League - for WHATEVER reason . Timmy , thus becomes , Mr. Versatile , NEVER fukn moans , ALWAYS puts a shift in , yet we have heads saying , " Is he a Journeyman ??? / Get rid ??? "

Sometimes , Evertonians wind me the fuk up !!!

I agree that Cahill is vital to the team and we'd be a lot worse off without him. The problem for Moyes at the moment is how to accommodate him in a system that allows us to play with more than one striker.

Maybe:

____Saha Beckford
_______Cahill
Pienaar Fellaini Arteta

Not too bad. The two strikers would occupy the centrebacks, leaving Timmy free in the box. Cahill could fill in to make a four in midfield and if Arteta and Pienaar played narrow we'd match up with the opposition. It would rely on the fullbacks getting forward to offer service from the flanks.

Or

___Bily Beckford Anichebe
___Cahill Fellaini Arteta

Anichebe would provide danger from the right. Bily would be a left-sided goalgetter. We'd probably lack a threat down the left hand side, due to Bily and Cahill wandering. Tim might find his opportunities to get forward limited due to his defensive commitments.

Or

______Saha Beckford
Pienaar Cahill Fellaini Arteta

Quite a functional lineup. It lacks a ballplayer in the centre of the player of the park. Arteta might be marginalised, being moved out to the right.
