American Food

I shall have to try when in San Diego! I've also seen a huge ice cream dessert served in a plastic baseball helmet but I can't remember which team it was now.

Was many years ago, but the experience at Petco was great. I think they value good food there (San Diego in general) so you're bound to get a good experience. In truth, it was probably a Hebrew National dog (which you can find lots of places), but I enjoyed it.

Cajun food, ... well, it's a long list.

Far too many ways this thread could go. Really, needs to be threads on BBQ, Tex-Mex (need @obc's input on what this is called outside of Texas), Southern food (@RAFUH and @mezzrow can handle this), Cajun food, ... well, it's a long list. What else has been mentioned? Holiday fare? Fair food? Ballpark food? Burgers (hot dogs in this category)? Grilled food? Sea food? NY Deli style? Pizza?

My favorite sandwiches:
The Special at Darrell's (Lake Charles, LA)
A burger at Louis' (Gainesville, FL--sadly now closed)
Smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's (Montreal, CA--this counts because it's "NY Style")

Also try: chicken fried steak, fried catfish
Loved it when I went there. The wait was outrageous though--probably 40 minutes or so for takeout.

Louis' Lunch... (sigh)

It was too far away, and never open when I was in town (usually at night), but yes. A special place. Miss it.

I can do a whole chicken fried steak thread with theological background for the cast-iron v. deep fry and chicken fried v country fried schisms.

Don't get me started on gravy. And I'm a heretic that likes his with rice. M-m-m...

Gravy on rice--is that not standard fare? Maybe it is in Louisiana but not East of Mobile.

Louis' was special. Mrs Nigh only spent two years in Gainesville, but that was my favorite place. Changed my world through the generous application of relish on food I had never previously considered.
