Never really understood this claim, especially given there is a Methodist Church in the corner of our ground???

No mate, St Luke's is Cof England.

We were born from a Methodist background and from a liberal tolerant (mostly) set of directors.

However, Houlding changed all that leading to the split.

We are not a Catholic, Protestant or any other faith exclusively.

Read David Kennedy's excellent work on the origin of the split. You should find it online.

We were tolerant of all faiths and left bigots behind.

Mind you our history regarding black or coloured players was not good. I can still remember horrible chants from the Street End as late as the 80s.

Yeah, being from Glasgow, I already understood that (we get taught about these things from an early age). I also couldn't care less.
David Kennedy has written extensively about the origins of the split. Fascinating in terms of the sociological history of Merseyside.

Everton left Houlding behind for a number of reasons- Tory political, his brewing background, and the straw that broke the camel's back was when he tried to enforce an increase in the rent being paid to him as Chairman of the Club.

It wasn't all about religion, but the directors who voted him out were fed up with his blustering intolerance of non Tories, non Orange Order, non Freemasons.

It took many years for the RS to shake off this history. I find it ironic how many southern Irish follow them. They definitely don't know their history.

I know one bloke who went over to see them. He got soaked on the morning of the match and so, he wore an Irish jersey with his RS scarf. He got terrible abuse.

After the 0-5 hammering at Goodison, we were drinking as usual in the Midland waiting to go for the overnight ferry. The cops came in and said the orange and NF from the Kop were looking for us. It was clearly stated that we should get down to ferry asap.

Thanks for sharing this. My degree is in Sociology, this would be an interesting read.

Anybody else find him annoying on Talksport? I swear to god he plays his accent up on the radio and his constant need to be a comedian is just grating.

Yes I know I should just switch off
He is even worse on the telly. If it is rs v Brentford, he will "lavish" praise on a 5 yard pass by trent darby back to his keeper, or stress the importance of a quality Robertson throw in.
Always goes with the so called 'bigger' team.
I couldnt get to the recent EFC v arse game, and i wanted to put my boot through my own tv screen, because of the 'professional jock'.

"Professional Jock"? Ooft, easy there tiger. Is it Super Ally you have a problem with, or is it something a bit deeper?

Does he have an issue just because he is Scottish? Maybe I'm looking too much into it, but I just wonder about 'professional jock', I'm not sure what that means exactly.
I don't know mate but now I think about it there used to be a saying 'professional scouser' which was labelled at Jimmy Tarbuck and Cilla Black. Namely that they were lacking in talent and using there geographical location as a selling point. Ally was a record goal scorer with a unique football knowledge and complements Alan Brazil, so I would ignore it.

Thanks mate. I got what he meant. Playing up regional stereotypes to mask a lack of talent.
Totally agree about Ally.

Not the greatest pundit in the world but seems a genuine down to earth guy with a good sense of humour.
Did you hear him yesterday (RS v Cardiff).?
You would think Harvey Elliot coming on, was like Alan Ball returning from a World cup triumph! Never heard someone lavish so much praise on a player who has done so little in the game. As the game approached 5 minutes from time, after the referee had inexplicably denied Cardiff a stonewall penalty (imho), and decided that Kelleher's studs up rake down the Cardiff players ankle and calf, 35 yards from goal, was merely a yellow card, McCoist went deeper and deeper Scottish, and described the world class Liverpool we had just watched. He has obviously been told, "don't upset the kopites, they bump up the viewing figures". He has taken that memo a bit too far.
Anyway, good luck to him, with his up and coming surgery. He is having his tongue surgically removed from the collective anuses of every Liverpool FC fan, player, and manager.
