After 10 games

Not anymore.

Too many matches in which we should have taken care of business and didn't. Dropped points. I'd say about six to eight.

It's a good start but only relative to what we were expecting in pre-season because of what we've seen from Everton in the past. Looking back on it though it's more frustrating than encouraging seeing how much we've wasted chances and conceded scrappy goals, if we want to do more than just 6th then we should be shoring up the defence and getting a little bit more ruthless in our finishing.
Saying that though the brand of football we are playing is excellent and we are definitely up there as one of the most attractive sides in the prem, if we can keep this going then we are a very good shout for the FA cup this season. In the league, hopefully things will properly click into place soon so we can finally start racking up wins again; there is nothing stopping us from going into 2013 with 4th place locked down and maybe even having one eye on the top 3, things might just all fall into place at the right moment to pull it off.

someone offered me 4th after 10 games playing some amazing stuff I would have bitten their hand off.

This kind of talk betrays a lack of ambition. We should be going for the title every season, playing to win every game.

To be fair to you, tho', a 4-5-1 win-draw-loss ratio is the kind of start we've been looking for. After 4 or 5 years of poor starts, followed by strong second-halfs of the season where we're always mulling over 'what-might-have-been', this season definitely has to be categorised as a "good start", but with reservations and points-to-improve:

- it's no good blaming the ref for games we should've won (Newcastle etc). He'll never change his mind, and media pressure only works for the Champions League clubs. Best just to take these crappy decisions on the chin.
- again, the lack of killer instinct amongst all that possession and creating-of-chances is losing us points. We have to work on getting Jelavic's form back, otherwise drop him and move Mirallas up. He bagged plenty of goals for Olympiakos playing in a striker's position. Jelavic has to feel his position is under threat if he doesn't provide the goods. The competition will do him good. With Jela back on form, Mirallas can go back to playing behind him.
- on the training ground, work on everyone's shooting ffs.
- Fellaini's best position is in the Makelele role. We need him there to break up opposition attacks. We've conceded too many soft goals because we've lost shape after a quick counter.

Even if we continue this form for the next 10 games, the really big test is if we can continue it for the second half of the season, as the pessimists amongst us have warned that once we do start a season well, we will end up not finishing it well. A further big test of how good we really are, and how successful we really can be, is to win matches where we didn't play well, where the opposition were the better team. Those kind of daylight robberies do wonders for a team's confidence.

A numbers-based test we can also do to calculate whether 17 points from 10 games is a good start is to multiply 17x3.8 to get our theoritical season points total (assuming similar form throughout the season).

= 64/65

This is only good enough for 5th-7th (goal ratio dependent) based on the last 3 seasons' final tables. If we scrape 5th, then at least we qualify for the UEFA Cup for the first time in a coupe of years, but we all want Champions League.

In short: our start is better than usual, generally decent, but should be better.

We are as good as our record shows. I hate arguments saying we are better or worse no matter what our table position is.

Fact. Teams make their own luck and great teams find a way to win despite the "unlucky bounces" (exception when Clattenburg refs)
Fact. If we were better we would have picked up points against the teams below us.

Our record shows we are a good team with room for improvement, which i find most exciting.

...and sidenote: We need a ginger on this team to counter the soulless opposition.

Agree with all that, apart from the ginge comment which I don't get (and I've got a ginger beard).

Fact Nr 3: Fulham and West Ham are only 2 points behind us, and if West Brom win their game in hand, they'll be level on points with us. Just to put our 'good start' under a different perspective...

We've played 6 away and 4 home games, though. You can't ignore that.

If I don't ignore that, then I also won't ignore we've only played one game against a top team. We've not met Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City or Spurs yet. These teams along with Man Utd represent our rivals, if they all finish above us then we're scrapping for 6th in front of Newcastle, Liverpool and the like (is 6th enough for UEFA Cup quali?)

Depends on the cups. But we are ahead of Arsenal and Spurs in the table, for the record.

The way I view it is that if you got two points for every game (78 points) you'll finish 3rd most years. So drawing every away game and winning every home one will get you CL football comfortably.

By that token we've dropped four points at home but got an extra three points on the road, so we're about on track.

The difference at the moment is i think we are playing better then the oother 4th placed challengers , with i feel like most , there is more to come from us.We have not seen the best of this team yet.
