My guess is that Ancelotti asks Allan to sit more (as he did when managing Napoli) and Doucoure presses with Allan mopping up. Bit of a partnership in that regard.

Those two i think will be fabulous in a 442.

But playing that formation, I don’t think you’ll get the best out of James, as I assume he’ll be asked to play wide right.

This is true, but in a 442 or a 433 James will be given licence to come inside and create. What we will need to support this is a dynamic right back, otherwise we will have no attacking width on that side. Despite Pickford's best efforts to undermine everything, I think a right back becomes a really important signing with the acquisition of James.

Also worth remembering that DCL and Richarlison are both more effective in a 442, so I can see us still using that. I think we'll see both systems used tbh, and perhaps a 4231 with James playing as a proper number 10

Trouble with that line up is that for at least 70% of the time you have Gomes getting caught on the ball and/or committing unnecessary fouls.
I would expect him to be a squad player this season overall.

The thing is we all know what Gomes is capable of. I appreciate he flatters to deceive a lot of the time. However I think you’ll see a different Gomes with having Doucoure and Allan alongside him, as opposed to Siguardisson and Davies.
