A Consolation Prize

As a lifelong Blue, I don't mind admitting that I am envious of Spurs and the rs being in the Champions League final.
I don't mind admitting that I'm also envious of Arsenal and Chelsea in the Europa League final, despite the whingeing about choice of venue.
And despite the attitude of some towards the League Cup, I'd love us to have bagged that once or twice in recent years.
On June 1st, I'll love it if Spurs can beat the rs but, on the opposite side, I'll really be quite miffed if the rs triumph in Madrid.
But here's the thing. Winning the Champions League is a great achievement for any club, but we know, the rs know, and the rest of the football world know that on this occasion, the CL will be a consolation prize for the once 'mighty' rs.
They may be able to quote 'six times' ad nauseam if they win, but the statistic that really gets under their unholy skin in now '30 years'.
COME ON YOU SPURS!!!!!

For the rest of Europe it’s still THE prize in football in my opinion. The reason is mainly because their leagues are so crap and uncompetitive. Winning a title doesn’t prove much for the one or two teams that dominate that league. The premier league though is something different. Winning it is still a huge accomplishment. It’s still a great big glittering prize. Is it 5 times more valuable/impressive than a European CL cup? No way for most players and managers; but for Liverpool fans - probably might be some that would say so! But in general nah not a consolation prize at all imo

For footballs sake and the sake of innocents it might not be a bad thing if they win it.
Their hatred for anyone who gets in their way is now at fever pitch, I mean look at Citeh. When these two play next season it will be hostile to say the least, and it will all come from one direction.
Collectively they have now become highly dangerous and they’re at that point were desperation could erupt at anytime.
As fans their currency is success and they’re skint and hungry, it’s a volatile mix.
They are a powder keg waiting to go off at anytime, so this might just pacify them for a while.

Nah, the drugs don’t work, it just makes them worse.

I would love MU to win CL. I am already envious of them playing in the final. It’s the biggest prize in football. Definitely not a consolation.

It's all a bit 'after the Lord Mayor's show'.

Nice night if you win it, but no one's under any illusions that the two teams playing for it - teams that have a combined total of 87 years without winning the English title - would much rather have won the PL.

As said....by about a proportion of 5:1 - the PL is that much greater and more difficult to win than the "Champions" League.

This us my point about the "champions" league. It lost its importance once you didn't need to be a champion to enter it. From that respect it's now so much easier to win compared withvrhen it was worth something.

"Mainly runners up with a few champions" league.

So you’d love Man U to win it, and are jealous of them being in the final?

You do know they’re not in the final yeah?

Sweet lamb of divine jesus
This weirdo pops up again
Pack it in

I am envious
Me too, of the teams that got to play in 86 and 88.

But hey ho, we’re bitter apparently.

This year’s final is bringing this point into sharp focus.

Hitherto, the CL winners have been either reigning champions in their own domestic league or have recently won it.

If it was Real Madrid playing Manchester United this year that glaring anomaly would not be so remarkable.

The fact that this year it will be won by a team which last won its own league almost thirty or sixty years ago respectively is highlighting the flaw which has always been at the heart of the CL.
