You want to talk about rewriting history? Okay, lets look at the league finishes from the last 20 years. With the exception of one season under Joe Royle, let's see if people can pinpoint when our fortunes as a club picked up:
1991/92 - 12th
1992/93 - 13th
1993/94 - 17th
1994/95 - 15th
1995/96 - 6th
1996/97 - 15th
1997/98 - 17th
1998/99 - 14th
1999/00 - 13th
2000/01 - 16th
2001/02 - 15th
2002/03 - 7th
2003/04 - 17th
2004/05 - 4th
2005/06 - 11th
2006/07 - 6th
2007/08 - 5th
2008/09 - 5th
2009/10 - 8th
2010/11 - 7th
2011/12 - 7th
Only twice in the past 10 seasons under Moyes have we finished lower than 10th.
Compared to only finishing above 12th once in the 11 seasons before Moyes came.
Of those 11 seasons before Moyes, 2 of the seasons we survived relegation on the final day, and 1 of those was on goal difference and thanks to Chelsea beating Bolton, as we couldn't beat Coventry at home to save ourselves.
Of the other 9 seasons, 1 was a close call (96/97; we won only 1 of our last 8 games) and the 4 years under Smith were all years of struggle, be it pulling clear of relegation in the March/April time period each season.
So, that's a total of 7 out of the 11 seasons before Moyes came that we were involved in a relegation fight, to varying degrees of seriousness.
If the stark look at the positional finishes above for the past 20 years don't illustrate the impact Moyes had on the club, very little else will.
