He still could of earned more at Chelsea mate and won titles, if Ross ever said he wanted to leave then did a u turn and stayed here the rest of his career he would be a goodison legend in my eyes 100%, like him or not (and I certainly don't like him) he's probably been the most loyal of players in recent times in england in terms of his ability.

Just look at Rooney, Shaw, Cole, Lallana etc.

I will admit that the since 2005 he most certainly has stayed loyal. He's just not a player I would want associated with the term loyalty. He basically threw his toys out of the cot to force a payrise from his boyhood club and took Liverpool for a ride.

If Barkley threatened to leave us to join Chelsea if we didn't give him a substantial payrise, I'd be fuming.

Ross Barkley has the potential to be a huge star in world football, he has just announced he has signed a long term contract with his boy-hood club, this is good news. We should shout from the rooftops.

I think it was more effective and safer to hold a press conference.

Quite how Ross signing a new contract caused such a mini-meltdown, I'm not sure I'll ever know.

Silly Season.

The club has become unrecognisable both on and off the pitch since the day that man walked through the door.

I wish people would stop bringing up the logo fiasco.

Like it's not only the signing. Every second sentence in his interview is heaven.

Wanted subtitles but. I liked how he turned bright red after praising RM.

Id like to have seen a 5 or 6 year contract to be honest like Newcastle have given to some of their French signings and manager..

We will probably need to address the contract again in two years anyway, so four seems fine to me.

Gives the player piece of mind something will have to be done sooner rather than later, and the club security, so is a good compromise.

Would want next contract to be five year mind, as he'll be more developed by then.

I was very happy with yesterday's announcement, and it deserved the media attention. Rooney was a one off, something that many clubs never get the chance to experience ever, a fan who has the gift of the football Gods... well it has happened twice in a decade here.

How this club is doing will be measured by the the progress and career path of Mr Barkley. The best thing is though, that unlike in 2002 we have numerous, young and talented footballers.

I would have liked to have seen him get a longer deal, but then the negotiations would have been very difficult as structuring a wage increase over 5-6 years when both the club and Ross himself have no idea what progress will be made in the next couple of years.

Perhaps offering him a slightly shorter deal on a reflective wage increase, offers the club the space to add a Lukaku without breaking FFP.

Hopefully once the 'star striker' is added we will have a few transfer windows were we are not desperate for a marquee signing and can concentrate on contracts and unearthing gems like Stones and Besic (I think he will be excellent).

Love Ross's words about remembering the day Rooney left and not wanting to be doing the same. All the talk about becoming a legend, winning trophies etc....

Great to hear. I think IF Everton can continually show ambition then this lad could well be here for the long hall

Indeed, as much as it seemed like an anticlimax after the talk of Lukaku signing etc., it was hard not to be moved by Ross saying that about Rooney leaving.

Let's have it right: if a bid came in for Barkley tomorrow this lot would look at it and accept it; Kenwright would drive Barkley to the buying club; and that press conference yesterday would be airbrushed from history in Orwellian fashion.

Massive statement of intent by the club my arse.
